James Milner wants to continue playing at the age of 40. |
On the morning of June 14, Brighton & Hove Albion confirmed that veteran midfielder James Milner had signed a one-year contract extension with the club, allowing him to continue playing in the Premier League when he turns 40.
Milner, 39, has made 638 appearances in the English top flight, putting him just 16 games away from Gareth Barry's record of 653. Before that, in 2024, the Brighton midfielder will make history by becoming the first player to play in the top flight of English football between the ages of 16 and 38.
On 10 November 2002, Milner made his debut for Leeds United, in a Premier League match against West Ham United. At 16 years and 309 days, the English star became the second youngest player ever to play in the Premier League.
From Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and now Brighton - Milner is the only English player to have represented five different Premier League clubs.
Milner impressed in Brighton's first three Premier League games of 2024/25, but a thigh injury kept him out for a long time. The midfielder, born in 1986, only returned in the final minutes of the match against Tottenham in the final round.
At Brighton, Milner, despite being 7 years older than coach Fabian Hurzeler, has proven that age is just a number. With his new contract, Milner aims to break into the first team under coach Fabian Hurzeler in the 2025/26 season.
