That is the opinion of the audience who came to Nguyen Du Stadium (HCMC) in recent days to watch the matches live.
This is the year that Vietnamese tennis players have performed impressively, leaving behind beautiful shots and bringing back heart-warming results. Thuy Linh continues to be the star in the women's singles with overwhelming dominance. It is understandable that she is currently ranked 18th in the world , 27 places ahead of the second seed Lalinrat Chaiwan.
Since the Vietnam Open is a Super 100 level tournament, the lowest in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Super Tour system, the dominance of a top 20 player like Thuy Linh is understandable. Even in 3 consecutive years (2022, 2023, 2024), she has won the title and is aiming for her 4th consecutive championship.
However, this year Thuy Linh is no longer a "lonely star". In recent years, Vietnamese tennis players have often been eliminated quite early and usually only 1-2 names remain in the quarterfinals. But this year, that number has increased to 4 people.
Among them are Thuy Linh in the women's singles. Nguyen Hai Dang in the men's singles and Nguyen Dinh Hoang - Tran Dinh Manh in the men's doubles. The last time Vietnamese badminton reached this number was in 2022. But at that time, all 4 players who won tickets to the quarterfinals were in the women's singles.
This year, the content is more evenly spread, bringing more emotions to the fans. Hai Dang, after years of failure, has learned how to overcome difficulties. He showed tenacity and significant improvement in defense and thanks to that, he has gone further than every year.
The Dinh Hoang - Dinh Manh pair is bringing a breath of fresh air. This is not their first time participating in the Vietnam Open, but it is the first time they have won tickets to the quarterfinals. And the rising duo of the men's doubles also created emotional victories no less than Hai Dang.
In the round of 16, they caused a stir with a narrow victory over the Taiwanese No. 6 seeds Su Ching Heng and Wu Guan Xun. Although they were behind many times in this match, the Vietnamese duo successfully turned the tables thanks to the enthusiastic cheers from the stands.
"It's been a long time since I spent so much time watching the Vietnam Open like this year. Every year, when the tournament goes deep, only Thuy Linh is left. So, I just watch her compete. But this year, I have to come earlier or stay later to watch Hai Dang, Dinh Hoang, and Dinh Manh too.
"I hope every year there will be more Vietnamese tennis players who go far so we can waste time like this," a fan humorously shared.
