MU wants to replace Onana with Costa but lacks transfer funds. |
According to British media, MU gave up on the Diogo Costa deal after learning that the goalkeeper's contract release clause was up to 64 million pounds. Coach Ruben Amorim wanted to replace Onana, but the limited budget prevented the "Red Devils" from making the deal.
In contrast, Man City began negotiations to bring Costa to the Etihad in the summer transfer window, as part of a squad overhaul. Goalkeeper Ederson is expected to leave Man City to play in Saudi Arabia, with only 1 year left on his contract. Stefan Ortega is also likely to leave, forcing Man City to find a quick replacement.
Man City have just made a few additions in the January 2025 transfer window such as Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov or Vitor Reis. However, Pep Guardiola understands that the squad needs to be "refreshed" after a season of poor performance.
The Premier League champions are currently third and could lose their crown to Liverpool this week. They were also eliminated from the Champions League in the round of 16 after conceding six goals to Real Madrid over two legs.
On the United side, the financial situation is increasingly tight under the new management of Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The cost-cutting plan is going strong, from personnel to small benefits such as free lunch for staff. In that context, buying a goalkeeper worth more than 60 million pounds is impossible.
