Floods and storm Matmo caused damage of 5,450 billion VND

Statistics as of 6 p.m. on October 10 showed that floods caused by storm Matmo (storm No. 11) in various localities have left 18 people dead and missing, with economic damage of about VND5,450 billion.

Urgently overcome the consequences of floods

In Thai Nguyen , the flood receded, leaving behind huge piles of garbage and foul odors on the streets. Water was restored to many areas so that people could wash their houses and clean their properties soaked in mud. Hundreds of police officers, soldiers, and youth volunteers were deployed to support schools, agencies, and offices in Phan Dinh Phung and Tuc Duyen wards... to clean up mud so that activities could be restored early next week. By the afternoon of October 10, Thai Nguyen had received nearly 105 billion VND from the community, units, and businesses to support people affected by the floods.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment requires Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, and Hanoi to closely monitor and ensure dike safety.

In Lang Son, the water has begun to recede, people are cleaning up and sanitizing their homes after the flood. According to statistics, the whole province has 9 damaged educational facilities, 153 traffic points have been eroded or flooded, the volume of landslides is estimated at more than 20,000 ^m3 . Some bridges, tunnels and roads have been washed away, isolating many residential areas. Some localities such as Yen Binh, Van Nham, Huu Lung, Tuan Son, Cai Kinh, That Khe, Trang Dinh, Quoc Viet... are still deeply flooded, traffic is cut off, power is out, and communication is interrupted.

In Hanoi, the rising waters of the Cau and Ca Lo rivers caused widespread flooding in Trung Gia and Da Phuc communes. The Hanoi Civil Defense Command established a forward command post, commanded by Lieutenant General Le Quang Dao, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, and Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Manh Quyen. The Hanoi Capital Command acted as the center for consulting, unifying, commanding, and directing the forces of the city, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Security, and Da Phuc and Trung Gia communes to respond to landslides and flooding. Hanoi also requested Trung Gia and Da Phuc communes to develop evacuation plans at each level and proactively respond when situations arise.

Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention, localities continue to urgently deploy support for people in flood-affected areas. The Ministry of National Defense transferred 10,000 blanket covers, 10,000 curtains, 2,000 sets of clothes to 4 provinces: Cao Bang, Thai Nguyen, Lang Son, Bac Ninh. Samaritan's Purse organization coordinated with the Department of Dyke Management and Disaster Prevention to deliver emergency relief goods (4,000 boxes of instant noodles, 4,000 boxes of drinking water, 4,000 boxes of sausages) to people in Lang Son.

In addition, the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention coordinated with international organizations that are members of the Disaster Risk Reduction Partnership to survey and quickly assess flood damage in Thai Nguyen, Tuyen Quang, and Lang Son to develop support plans.

Closely monitor and ensure dike safety

Also in Hanoi, on the evening of October 10, floodwaters still surrounded and isolated many villages in Trung Gia commune. To cope with the river water about to overflow the dike, the incident of erosion, breakage, and landslides caused water to penetrate the Ha Thai railway passing through 3 villages in Trung Gia commune. The Hanoi City Civil Defense Command assigned the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Hanoi City, Da Phuc Commune People's Committee, and Army Corps 12 to coordinate patrols and guard to promptly detect the incident. In case of emergency, flare guns and communication means will be used to notify and warn.

Faced with the exceptionally large flood situation on Cau River, Thuong River, and Ca Lo River, exceeding historical peaks, on October 10, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep signed an urgent dispatch requesting leaders of Bac Ninh Province, Hanoi City, and Thai Nguyen City to deploy measures to ensure safety for the dikes.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the floods after storm No. 11 caused 49 incidents that threatened flood safety, including many dike lines that had to be organized to prevent overflow on a large scale: Cha dike, Ha Chau dike, Thai Nguyen city dike (old); Cau left and right dike; Thuong left and right dike, Ca Lo right dike with a total length of about 20 km.
