At least 11 people have died after a bridge collapsed in northern China following heavy rain, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. The bridge collapse in Shaanxi province occurred at around 8:40 p.m. Friday local time due to sudden heavy rain and flash floods, according to the Shaanxi provincial government.

“Nearly 20 vehicles and more than 30 people” remain missing after a highway bridge in Shangluo, Shaanxi province collapsed into a river on Friday evening, CCTV said.
Rescue operations were underway on Saturday morning, with five vehicles recovered from the water so far, according to Xinhua. Footage on state-run CCTV showed parts of the bridge submerged and the river flowing rapidly.
Large swaths of northern and central China have been hit by heavy rain since Tuesday, causing flooding and significant damage. At least four people have died and eight are missing after rain triggered floods and landslides in Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, state media reported on Friday.
Heavy rain is expected to hit eastern Shandong Province and southwestern Sichuan Province, according to the China Meteorological Administration.
