VnExpressVnExpress06/06/2023

Can Tho City People's Committee approved the budget for purchasing chemicals and medical supplies at the City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, speeding up the selection of suppliers to address the blood shortage.

This is the conclusion of Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien, at the meeting to solve the difficulty of blood shortage serving patient treatment of the city's Hematology - Blood Transfusion Hospital, on June 5.

Accordingly, the City People's Committee has approved the budget for purchasing chemicals, supplies, and medical equipment in 2023-2024 at Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital. The Department of Health and the hospital must submit to the People's Committee a plan to select a contractor to implement the procurement by June 9 at the latest.

While waiting for the contractor to be selected, the hospital proactively purchased medical supplies and equipment to ensure patient treatment. The hospital also reviewed the demand and supply of blood and blood products for emergency and treatment in the next 3-4 months, reporting to the city every three days.

On June 4, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Viet, Director of Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, proposed three solutions to deal with the shortage of blood and blood products.

Option one is to quickly approve the plan to select contractors to supply chemicals and medical supplies. If approved quickly within 1-2 weeks, the bidding results will be available in about 4 months. After that, it may take another 1-2 months for the winning bidder to prepare and supply goods for use for a year, with a value of about 150 billion VND.

Option two is direct purchase (bid) with a value of about 30-40 billion VND, estimated to have goods in about 1-2 months, using about three months while waiting for bidding results.

Option three is to buy small packages, according to authority under 100 or 500 million VND to temporarily solve the emergency needs and treatment of blood diseases of the hospital.

Thus, Can Tho City People's Committee has chosen options one and three to solve the current widespread blood shortage in the Mekong Delta provinces.

Since early June, due to prolonged bidding difficulties, Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital has run out of blood bags to prepare and supply to 74 hospitals in the West. The hospital recommends that medical facilities use blood sparingly, only in emergency cases.
