The 1,000-foot-long Dali collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26, damaging the bridge and blocking waterway traffic. A civil lawsuit has been filed against Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine Private in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

"We are committed to ensuring that those responsible are compensated for the damage caused by the accident," said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. The Justice Department is seeking to recover more than $100 million to cover the cost of cleaning up and reopening the port of Baltimore.
The accident occurred when the Dali lost power while leaving Baltimore port for Sri Lanka and crashed into a bridge.
According to Deputy Attorney General Benjamin Mizer, the ship’s owners and operators knew about the ship’s vibration problems that could cause power outages, but failed to take adequate precautions. He blamed poor management and cost-cutting decisions for contributing to the disaster.
Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine Private have previously filed legal action to limit their liability to $44 million. A separate lawsuit over the cost of rebuilding the bridge is expected to be filed by the state of Maryland. Families of the six workers who died are also pursuing separate lawsuits.
