On January 26, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released data showing that 13,000 people have died from the flu this season in the US so far.
According to the CDC, 18 million people have been sickened this flu season in the US, with 210,000 hospitalized.
Currently, the epidemic continues to develop complicatedly in most regions across the country.
In the most recent week alone (ending January 20), 10 children died from the flu, bringing the number of children who have died this flu season to 57.
The CDC said that in late December 2023, the number of flu cases tended to decrease or stabilize nationwide, but from early January 2024, the situation reversed.
The agency will continue to monitor the second phase of flu activity, which typically increases after the winter holidays.
The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine every year to minimize exposure to the flu.
In addition to flu, the CDC also warns that measles cases are on the rise in the US, and urges health care providers to monitor for outbreaks.
From December 1, 2023 to January 23, 2024, CDC was notified of 23 cases of measles, including 7 cases of direct international travel. Most of these cases were in children and adolescents who had not been vaccinated against measles.
The US CDC stated that the increase in imported measles cases in recent weeks reflects the increasing global measles epidemic as well as the threat of this disease. The US CDC called on authorities to closely monitor the situation and proactively prevent the disease.
