The move comes amid Israeli attacks that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza. In Beirut, US envoy Hochstein is expected to meet with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, according to Reuters.

US envoy Amos Hochstein speaks at a press conference in Beirut, Lebanon, on October 21, 2024.
Earlier, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri declared on Al-Arabiya television that the visit of US envoy Hochstein was the last chance before the US elections to reach a ceasefire agreement. He also affirmed his rejection of any amendments to UN Resolution 1701 – the document that ended the Hezbollah-Israel conflict in 2006. Berri added that "new agreements could be reached" to implement the resolution.
US envoy Hochstein's trip to the Middle East comes after Axios, citing two US and two Israeli officials on October 20, reported that Tel Aviv had given Washington a list of its conditions for a diplomatic solution to end the fighting in Lebanon.
According to sources, the list includes requests for Israel's forces to be allowed to participate in "active law enforcement operations" to ensure Hezbollah does not rearm and rebuild military infrastructure near the border. Additionally, Israel requested that its air force be allowed to operate freely in Lebanese airspace.
A U.S. official told Axios that it is highly unlikely that Lebanon and the international community will agree to these conditions from Israel.
In other news, the U.S. State Department announced that Secretary of State Antony Blinken departed for the Middle East on October 21. This marks Blinken's 11th trip to the Middle East since the Hamas-Israel conflict erupted on October 7, 2023. The State Department said in a statement that Secretary Blinken will discuss with regional leaders the importance of ending the conflict in Gaza, post-conflict scenarios, and finding a solution to end the hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
The US State Department said the top diplomat's first stop would be Israel, but provided no details about other destinations.
