US, France express opposing views on solution for Ukraine

Việt NamViệt Nam25/02/2025

After the meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Washington on February 24, with the main content revolving around the Ukraine conflict, the statements of the two leaders showed the contrasting positions between these two long-time allies.

*President Macron: Agreement on Ukraine possible in coming weeks

At a joint press conference, the US president expressed his desire for a ceasefire as soon as possible, saying he was trying to arrange a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. He also left open the possibility of traveling to Moscow to meet the Russian leader once an agreement was reached. Meanwhile, the French president urged a more cautious approach, starting with a ceasefire and then a peace agreement that includes security guarantees, asserting that he wanted a “quick peace ” but did not want a “weak” agreement.

The two leaders agreed on the deployment of a European peacekeeping force after a peace deal is reached, with President Trump saying the Russian leader would accept it. However, the US leader reiterated his demand that Europe shoulder the burden of supporting Ukraine in the future, as Washington will withdraw billions of dollars in aid it has provided to Kiev. On this issue, the French president said that Europe was ready to increase defense spending, but expressed hope that Washington would actively participate in ensuring any peace deal in Ukraine. The French leader stressed that Kiev must be included in negotiations to end the conflict.

Despite the disagreements, Mr Macron described the talks with Mr Trump as “a turning point” in efforts towards a more unified approach.

In an interview with Fox News after meeting the US President, Mr. Macron stated that a ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia could be reached “within weeks.”

Mr Macron is the first European leader to visit the White House since Mr Trump took office for a second term a month ago. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also expected to visit the US this weekend, amid concerns in Europe about Mr Trump's tough stance on Ukraine and the rapid thaw in relations between Moscow and Washington.
