Since November 2023, the Houthis have carried out numerous missile and drone attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
The Houthis argue such actions are meant to show solidarity with the many Palestinians affected by Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, Lebanese authorities accused Israel of destroying the government headquarters of Nabatieh, the capital of Nabatieh province in southern Lebanon, on October 16, killing 16 people, including Nabatieh Mayor Ahmad Kahil, and injuring 52. This is the largest attack on an official Lebanese state building since Israel's air campaign began, according to Reuters.
Lebanese officials have condemned the attack, saying it is evidence that Israel's campaign against Hezbollah is shifting to targeting the Lebanese state.
The Israeli military said on October 16 that it had struck dozens of Hezbollah targets in Nabatiyeh but did not comment on targeting Mr. Kahil.

There is currently no information about Israel's response to the alleged airstrike on Latakia.
