The theme of history and patriotism is always attractive to viewers. For the first time, a historical film with State investment and production funding like "Dao, Pho and Piano" has caused a "fever" in theaters and caused a stir in public opinion. Is Doan Quoc Dam surprised? - I am very surprised by the effect that Dao, Pho and Piano has had at the present time, I did not expect the film to be so "hot". Because before that, I did not think that this work would have the opportunity to reach a large audience, receive such great attention and support. This is probably also a good sign, through which the authorities and experts will invest and develop historical films as well as State films. Because we all know, nothing conveys messages as quickly and easily touches people's hearts as art.

In your opinion, why did "Peach, Pho and Piano" achieve such a strong effect? - I think the theme of history and patriotism has always attracted viewers of many generations. Peach, Pho and Piano recreates the difficult and heroic days. There, people are ready to stand up to protect the land they live on and the people they love. In their hearts and souls is the desire for peace , the desire to eat a bowl of pho, listen to a song, and see peach blossoms on Tet. The film was spread strongly by impressive short clips shared by TikTokers and Facebookers. I am very grateful to them, because thanks to that, Peach, Pho and Piano became known quickly and had such a strong effect. Another factor, of course just my personal speculation, is that currently entertainment films account for a large number in the market. Many audiences enjoy enjoying a work rich in art, to bring new and different emotions. How did the opportunity for you to participate in "Peach, Pho and Piano" originate? - One day, while I was sleeping, I suddenly received a phone call from the organizer of this project's production. He said that director Phi Tien Son wanted to meet me, after seeing my performance in some previous TV dramas. Thanks to Mr. Son's trust, my role was assigned right away, without having to go through the casting stage. Holding the film script, I was moved and excited, so I immediately accepted, invested time to research and transform into the character. Looking back, do you see any regrets in this film project? - The film project may still have many shortcomings, not really as excellent as everyone expected. When watching it again, there are also scenes that I think if I had the chance to do it again, I would do better. However, I hope this will be the premise for there to be more films about the history, country and people of Vietnam sent to young people and international friends.

"I decided to make my character a little goofy"

Playing the role of Dan - a militiaman in the Winter - Spring campaign (1946-1947), how did you create unique features for your character?

- I have played the role of a soldier before, each time with different emotions. This time, I play the role of Dan, a young man in his 20s, a national guard soldier participating in the Winter-Spring campaign in late 1946 and early 1947, when our army was just formed and equipment was still scarce.

He stood up to fight the enemy with a strong love for his country, inside he still had many desires and wishes but because of the war he could not fulfill them.

Because of that, I decided to make my character a little more naive and straightforward. Everything he does is spontaneous, without any intention. Dan's character is completely different from the previous roles I often played, when they were often scheming, individualistic, and used a lot of brains.

In Dao, Pho and Piano , the crew did not build or emphasize the "epic" nature but wanted the audience to feel it for themselves. Everything is primitive and simple.

Everyone's wish at that time was to live, watch peach blossoms, and enjoy a peaceful Tet holiday. There, they could eat a bowl of pho and listen to their favorite music.

In recent days, the image of you falling while filming a difficult scene in "Peach, Pho and Piano" has been widely spread on social media. Surely you encountered many difficulties with these scenes?

- The filming process had some difficulties but they were not significant. For me, that is also normal in this profession. I am happy to be able to contribute and transform into such a character.

Participating in Dao, Pho and Piano , I had different experiences, including countless adventurous climbing scenes, all performed by myself. In the scene where I rolled down from the tiled roof, my knees, elbows and my whole body were scratched.

The roof tiles have scaly knobs like dragon scales and are very sharp. Therefore, when they are stuck into the elbows, knees, and hips, they cause scratches and bleeding.

Initially, the film crew also used stuntmen to ensure the safety of the actors. However, in the falling scenes, they simply performed the falling movements, without acting skills or expressions, making the characters lack "soul".

Seeing that, I told director Phi Tien Son: "Let me try it. If the crew thinks it's okay, I'll do it from now on." After that, the crew decided to let me do all the action scenes instead of being a stuntman.

The behind-the-scenes image of him standing "strutting" holding a peach branch was also shared a lot by the audience. What is the origin of that photo?

- (Laughs) That image was taken by the secretaries in the crew or the makeup team while I was waiting to film. They took it as a souvenir or used it as a reference to connect the scenes. I didn't intentionally pose like that for them to record, it was simply a few minutes of mischief while waiting. Later, when they sent me the photo, I found it funny and cheerful, so I posted it on my personal page. I didn't expect that people would share it so much afterwards. Did the scene in the car with singer Tuan Hung leave you with any memorable experiences? - That was one of the impressive scenes for me. Because the scene was filmed at night, the car wasn't as "smooth" as modern cars, everyone in the car suffered a lot. In addition to the fact that we got carsick, there were times when the car wouldn't start, and there were problems when we had to close the doors to film. We couldn't roll down the windows, so we sat inside and "drowned" in the smell of oil and gasoline coming from the undercarriage and floor of the car. We had to hold back, sometimes even suffocate, to finish the scene. When the director called cut, signaling that the scene was over, everyone rushed out like bullets. Tuan Hung also shared with me that he really liked this role, and was not afraid of any hardship to transform into the character.

"Wherever you can act, that is the sanctuary" What do you think about director Tran Luc and singer Tuan Hung when they both participated in the movie "Peach, Pho and Piano"? - Uncle Tran Luc is a veteran actor, who has had many successes in both the theater and film industries. During the working process, the two of us talked very happily. He confided and shared with me a lot about his life, his career, and the theater that he is dedicating his heart to. Because we are both professionals, we had no difficulty in working together. As for Tuan Hung, in real life, he is a humorous person, who often jokes around. Also because of the fun and humor between the actors, the scene in the car was somewhat easier. To do this scene, we had to sit in the car from 6pm to 6am the next morning. Having acted with many beautiful women on screen, it seems that you have never had a "13+" hot scene like with Cao Thuy Linh in "Peach, Pho and Piano"? Did you face any pressure or difficulties? - This is truly my first "hot" scene on screen, instead of the purely emotional scenes like the films I did before. For me, acting is a job that I am passionate about and love, so I have never thought that any scene I take on is difficult or stressful. If anything, it is just how I will interact with my co-stars, how I transform into the character to meet the director's intentions. I have been in the profession for many years, and have more experience in acting. That's why, during the time I was filming the scenes together, I shared and discussed with Thuy Linh so that she would be less shy and more confident in front of the camera.

The audience still calls him the "chameleon" of the small screen. Coming to the film project "Peach, Pho and Piano", he has had initial successes. Do you have any plans to develop and expand into the film industry instead of just being a "familiar face" on television? - In the near future, I will still focus on television projects. First of all, there is a project that will be released to the audience next March. In my work, I often do not distinguish between cinema, television or theater. As long as there is a good script, I will accept, invest, and research to create a unique quality for the character. For me, wherever I can act and do what I love, that place is a sanctuary. No role is the same as another, no place limits the creativity of the artist. For me, only when the actor does not do well, the role will be similar in the eyes of the profession as well as the audience. The actor's creativity with the character he plays is the key factor. In the future, when there is a suitable film project, I will be ready to participate and give my all to the role, as I did with the films I participated in before. Thank you for sharing!
