Young man PMQ (22 years old, in Hanoi ) was taken by his family to the Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital because of his changing personality, irritability, little sleep and playing games a lot.
Originally a student in the Faculty of Biotechnology at a university in Hanoi, this male student had to stop studying because of his game addiction .
Doctor talks to a patient with mental health disorder due to internet addiction
The patient's mother said that when her son was in 7th grade, when his parents divorced, Q. started playing games and felt like he was relieving stress. Gradually, Q. played games day and night, spending 10-12 hours a day playing games. Many times, this young man skipped meals or just ate simple things like instant noodles or energy drinks.
Seeing her son was too addicted to games, the mother advised him many times, even turning off the computer to prevent Q. from playing games. This made the boy angry, argued and sometimes even hit his mother.
Since passing the university entrance exam, Q. moved to live with his friends, so his mother could not supervise and remind him like before. The teacher at school saw that Q. was showing unusual signs, so he called the family to inform them. Q.'s mother then took her son to a mental hospital for two treatments in 9 months, but his condition improved very slowly.
About 2 weeks before being hospitalized, his mother took away his computer and did not allow him to play online games. Q. got angry, cursed, and ran away to a shop to get a computer to play games. The patient slept poorly, about 2-3 hours/night, and ate poorly.
On the afternoon of July 24, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Long, Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital, said that at the time of hospitalization, the patient suffered from online game addiction syndrome, emotional behavioral disorder, and sleep disorder.
Doctors warn of many consequences from game addiction
After 2 weeks of treatment, Q. was more alert, his emotions and behavior were more stable, he reduced his time using the phone and computer to less than 2 hours/day and was discharged from the hospital for outpatient treatment. However, according to Dr. Long, the risk of relapse into online gaming is very high if the family does not cooperate well in treatment, creating a good environment for the patient to stay away from the internet and online games.
Doctor Dang Thi Hai Yen, Institute of Mental Health, said that after COVID-19, children use phones and computers more. This is a condition that makes children easily fall into a state of online game addiction. According to statistics at the Institute of Mental Health, up to 43% of inpatients for internet addiction and online game addiction are in the 10-24 age group.
To detect children addicted to online games early, Dr. Bui Nguyen Hong Bao Ngoc, Deputy Head of the Department of Substance Use and Behavioral Medicine, Institute of Mental Health, said that if children play games 4 hours/day, parents need to think about pathological problems, especially when children reduce other activities such as: Less social interaction, little or no physical exercise, decline in academic results...
With online game addiction, in addition to using drugs, behavioral therapy, psychological therapy and electrotherapy will help improve the patient's psychology and behavior. However, patients addicted to the internet and online games often have emotional disorders, behavioral disorders... making treatment complicated, prolonged and with a high risk of relapse.
