Lam Dong male student causes surprise at Asia Pacific Informatics Olympiad

(Dan Tri) - All 6/6 contestants of the Vietnamese team won high prizes at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad, including some surprising contestants.

On the evening of May 27, the Ministry of Education and Training announced that it had just received information about the official results of the Vietnamese national team participating in the 2025 Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO) hosted by Uzbekistan.

The Vietnamese national team has 6 students from Hanoi , Lam Dong, Binh Dinh, Quang Ninh, and Lao Cai participating in the award consideration.

As a result, 100% of students won medals, including: 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals.

As the youngest contestant on the team as a 10th grader, Dang Huy Hau won the silver medal with a very unique solution and achieved the maximum score in exercise 3 with the main processing part using only 4 lines of code. This surprised everyone. Hau is a student at Thang Long High School for the Gifted, Lam Dong province.

The "bright star" of the team is Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, an 11th grade student at the High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, who won a gold medal with 236/300 points.

Notably, Dung had 2 tests with the maximum score of 100 points; especially in test number 1, he was one of three candidates in the exam with the maximum score.

The list of winners also includes Le Kien Thanh, a 12th grade student from Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted, Binh Dinh province, who won a silver medal.

The three students who won bronze medals were: Ninh Quang Thang, grade 12 student, Ha Long High School for the Gifted, Quang Ninh province; Nguyen Huy Phong, grade 11 student, Lao Cai High School for the Gifted, Lao Cai province; Nguyen Xuan Chi Thanh, grade 11 student, High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

With this result, the Vietnamese Informatics Olympic team ranked 5th after China, Russia, Japan, and South Korea, continuing to affirm its leading position among countries in the Southeast Asian region.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, this result also shows that Vietnamese students have been equipped with adequate and updated knowledge. In addition, the results of many years in international and regional Informatics Olympiads show that Vietnamese students have the aptitude and thinking in Computer Science on par with the top students in the region.

The 19th Asia Pacific Informatics Olympiad was held from May 17 to May 18, attracting the participation of 42 delegations from countries and territories, with 868 contestants participating in the competition.

This year's exam questions are considered creative, following the exam trends of the International Olympiad in Informatics, with each question having many flexible and creative approaches.
