Ho A Trung - scored 26.45 points in the 2024 high school graduation exam.

Always telling himself to escape poverty, Ho A Trung - a former student of Dien Bien Province Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities accepted to leave his family at the age of 15 to go to the lowlands to study. After many years, Trung also reaped the "sweet fruit", excelling with 26.45 (8.2 in Math, 8.5 in Physics and 9.75 in Chemistry) to become the valedictorian of the A00 group of the whole school in the 2024 high school graduation exam.

Born and raised in a particularly difficult mountainous commune of Dien Bien province, Ho A Trung always tried to study well to escape poverty. Trung admits that he is different from other children in the lowlands, since the moment he was born, his mother carried him on her back to work in the fields.

Growing up, he had a little bit of awareness. His two older sisters got married and his parents went to work to earn a living. Trung took care of the food and education of his five younger siblings. Taking the hardship as motivation, Trung hoped that in the near future he could help his family reduce their suffering and that all of his siblings could go to school.

“My family is a farmer, working in the fields in the morning and working in the fields in the afternoon, so our family’s economy is not very good, we only eat one meal at a time. In the past, my two sisters and I often went to school hungry to give our meals to our younger siblings. Foods like meat or fish were luxuries for my family,” Trung shared about life.

Although the family's economy was not very good, the parents still tried to raise Trung's two older sisters to finish high school. Therefore, for Trung and his five younger siblings, they hoped that they could study to escape poverty and hunger.

Trung recounted that when he heard that he had achieved a high score in the High School Graduation Exam, his father was so happy that he couldn't speak. Trung confided: "My father was unlucky because he didn't have a chance to go to school, for him, being literate was already a blessing. However, for me, my father is my greatest inspiration, whenever I encounter difficulties, he is always by my side.

Not to mention, during my entire high school journey, although it was difficult, every time there was a long break, my father traveled more than 200 km to pick me up from school, regardless of sunny or rainy or cold days.

Ho A Trung dreams of becoming a soldier.

Dream of being a soldier

With a score of 26.45 in block A00, Ho A Trung plans to submit his first choice to the Political Officer University.

“Since I was a child, I have loved wearing a military uniform to contribute to the process of building my homeland. If I fail my first choice, I will study pedagogy to reduce the burden of tuition fees and in my free time I can still work as a tutor, earning extra income to cover living expenses,” Trung said.

In Trung's hometown, local students rarely have the means and ability to attend university. Most of the people here are farmers or work far away. Young people who finish high school get married and have extremely difficult lives.

The male student hopes that his story can inspire young people in the village to overcome difficulties, excel in their studies, and realize all their dreams: "I think my score is not excellent, but I hope I can bring young people motivation, to strive to excel in their studies and achieve high results."

During his three years of high school, Trung was an excellent student in his class and school. In grade 11, Trung won the Encouragement Prize in Chemistry and Chemistry on a handheld calculator at the provincial level; in grade 12, he won the Encouragement Prize in Chemistry at the provincial level and while still in high school, the young man won the Encouragement Prize in Mathematics on a handheld calculator at the district level.

Ms. Vu Thi Mai Hien - teacher at Dien Bien Province Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, Trung's homeroom teacher, said that she always pays special attention to her young student. In her class, all students have difficult circumstances, but Trung's family is a special case.

“Trung’s mother has been sick for a long time, and his father is the main breadwinner in raising the eight children. Trung never blames his circumstances, instead he is very obedient, hard-working, and tries to excel in his studies. Every time there is a scholarship, his classmates recommend Trung, even though the other students’ families are also in difficult circumstances,” said Ms. Hien.

In class, the boy does not hesitate to help his friends with their studies and actively participates in group activities, so his friends and teachers really like Trung. Ms. Hien hopes that in the future, the male student will always try, make every effort and never give up.

“If you encounter difficulties, look back, I and everyone else are still here ready to help when you need it. I believe you will be more successful in the future,” Ms. Hien told her young student.

Sharing about his study method, Trung said: "After solving all the exercises in the textbook, I moved on to practicing and solving more difficult questions.

I don’t often stay up late to study, because staying up too late can easily affect my studying spirit the next day. During class, I try to grasp the knowledge firmly so that when I get back to my room, I can just review it and practice the questions right away,” Trung shared.

For Math and Chemistry, the male student did not encounter many difficulties and when entering the exam room, he was very confident. Trung believes that to be good at all subjects, passion is also one of the important factors.
