Effectively utilizing the advantage of its large forest land area of over 500,000 hectares, along with suitable climate and soil conditions for cinnamon growth and development, the province has issued numerous plans and directed relevant agencies and localities to develop cinnamon cultivation towards large-scale, concentrated commodity production, linked to processing and consumption markets.

The focus is on forming a product value chain, while simultaneously applying scientific and technological advancements to improve the quality, value, brand, and competitiveness of cinnamon products, meeting the requirements of both domestic and export markets.

People in Tan Son commune are proactively cultivating seedlings to expand the area for cinnamon cultivation.

To achieve the goal of expanding cinnamon cultivation area and forming concentrated production zones for export, the province has directed the Department of Agriculture and Forestry and local authorities to proactively take advantage of funding sources from policies encouraging agricultural and rural development, as well as central government programs and projects, to support the expansion of cinnamon cultivation area.

In addition, programs and projects for developing production linked to processing and consumption markets along the value chain are being built and implemented synchronously; strengthening linkages and forming cooperatives, cooperative groups, and farms to ensure stable input and output for members participating in the chain.

The provincial Forestry Department is also actively implementing various solutions to encourage people to expand the area planted with cinnamon. Accordingly, they are strengthening the management of forestry seedling production and trading establishments, ensuring the supply of high-quality cinnamon seedlings; guiding people to apply the correct planting and care techniques; and recommending the selection of cinnamon seedlings with clear origins and good quality.

Directing forest protection departments to coordinate with local authorities to develop a plan for the concentrated cinnamon growing area; encouraging and supporting the development of cinnamon processing facilities linked to raw material areas to strengthen linkages, create value chains, and increase income for people. Simultaneously, developing a plan to include cinnamon trees in the list of tree species to be converted to large timber forests, contributing to improving the economic efficiency of forests.

In various localities, numerous documents and directives have been issued and implemented in accordance with local conditions. Information and communication efforts have been intensified, creating consensus and encouraging people to proactively contribute matching funds to expand the area under cinnamon cultivation.

Trung Son commune has over 4,000 hectares of forest land. In recent years, the development of cinnamon cultivation has significantly contributed to increasing the income of the people, especially ethnic minorities. Comrade Dinh Hai Nam, Secretary of the Commune Party Committee, stated: The commune's Party Committee has issued a specialized resolution on the development of hill and forest economy, identifying cinnamon as the key crop for the 2025-2030 period. The resolution aims to build a concentrated, sustainable cinnamon growing area, linking economic development with forest resource protection and improving the lives of the people. From initially scattered planting areas, the entire commune now has over 1,400 households growing cinnamon with a total area of more than 2,800 hectares. Cinnamon is playing a crucial role in the strategy of developing the hill and forest economy, contributing to poverty reduction and improving the lives of local people.

Thanks to the decisive involvement of all levels of government and the consensus of the people, the area of cinnamon trees in the province has continuously increased, reaching over 5,000 hectares to date, an increase of more than 1,300 hectares compared to 2022, exceeding the planned target for the 2021-2025 period. Many concentrated cinnamon growing areas have been established in communes such as Trung Son, Tan Son, Thuong Long, etc.

The people of Trung Son commune are proactively caring for and expanding the area planted with cinnamon trees.

However, the development of cinnamon cultivation in the province still faces some limitations. Despite a relatively large area, concentrated planting of 5 hectares or more is rare; most cultivation is small-scale, intercropped with other crops. Cinnamon cultivation is largely spontaneous, lacking adherence to technical procedures regarding planting density, care, and plant varieties, leading to slow growth, low yield, and poor quality. Post-harvest cinnamon products still heavily depend on traders from outside the province, resulting in an unstable market; processing and distribution facilities within the province are few and small-scale.

In the coming period, the province will continue to direct relevant departments and localities to focus on the comprehensive development of cinnamon cultivation in accordance with the set goals and plans. This includes prioritizing the development and implementation of programs and projects that link production with processing and consumption markets along the value chain. Strengthening linkages and forming cooperatives, production groups, and farms will ensure stable input and output for cinnamon growers.

Simultaneously, we will develop and establish the geographical indication "Phu Tho Cinnamon," gradually enhancing the value and economic efficiency of cinnamon cultivation, contributing to sustainable forestry development and improving the lives of the people.
