Experts say drinking 200 to 400 mg of caffeine, equivalent to four small cups of coffee, a day can help with weight loss.
According to experts, besides diet and exercise, one of the most effective fat-fighting drinks is coffee. According to Dr. Tammy Lakatos Shames and Dr. Lyssie Lakatos, certified nutritionists, consuming 200 to 400 mg of caffeine per day is reasonable for weight loss.
This claim is in line with research from Harvard's TH Chan School of Public Health , which found that four cups of coffee a day can reduce body fat by about 4%.
"Coffee contains caffeine, which has a thermogenic effect and speeds up your metabolism, helping you burn more calories. Some studies have shown that it helps reduce body mass index, weight, and body fat. Coffee also helps reduce hunger," Dr. Lakatos and Dr. Shames write in The Nutrition Twins.
Research shows that drinking coffee four hours or less before a meal can reduce calorie intake at the next meal. Coffee also contains chlorogenic acid, which increases fat burning and helps slow down carbohydrate absorption.

However, drinking coffee improperly can still cause weight gain. Caffeine acts as a stimulant, blocking the effects of adenosine, the chemical that causes sleepiness. This can disrupt the core sleep cycle. Poor sleep hygiene can cause weight gain, cravings, and many people want to eat more processed foods.
Although plain coffee is low in calories, many coffee drinks are high in calories and sugar. Coffee shops and franchises often sell drinks with added sugar, which can contribute to weight gain.
The simplest way to lose weight with coffee is to drink it black. The antioxidants and caffeine in coffee help with weight loss. Without adding sugar, milk, creamer or other ingredients, this drink is calorie-free.
