The Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 tankers sank on December 15, 2024.

According to TASS news agency, in a statement released on January 12, Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov said that fuel oil continued to leak from the sunken Volgoneft 239 tanker near the port of Taman in Russia's southern Krasnodar Region after checking the cleanup operations in the area.

Mr. Kurenkov and members of the federal crisis response center, created on the instructions of President Vladimir Putin, arrived in the city of Anapa on the northern Black Sea coast.

Members of the center will work directly at the emergency site until the spill is completely contained. The center, which includes representatives from several federal departments and agencies, is authorized to make rapid on-site decisions.

Minister Kurenkov will monitor the progress of the oil cleanup at sea. He is expected to convene a meeting of the government commission to discuss additional measures to quickly deal with the incident.

The oil spill occurred on December 15, 2024 in Kerch Bay when two Russian oil tankers ran into trouble in stormy weather conditions.

According to the Russian Ministry of Transport , 2,400 tons of oil have spilled, polluting more than 60 kilometers of the Black Sea coastline and severely affecting the flora and fauna there. Thousands of rescue workers and volunteers are working hard to clean up tons of contaminated sand and soil.

President Putin has called the spill one of Russia's most serious environmental challenges in recent years, saying cleanup efforts so far have been insufficient to mitigate the damage.
