The Russian Defense Ministry said its troops had taken control of the villages of Progres and Yevgenivka in Donetsk, several kilometers apart.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged Kiev forces were under pressure in the region in a speech Sunday evening.

“The directions towards Donetsk are extremely challenging, and the direction towards Pokrovsk is where the largest number of Russian attacks have been carried out in these weeks – the most intense enemy attacks have taken place precisely there,” he said.
“Whoever prevents Russian attacks and destroys Russia's offensive potential is performing one of the most important tasks in this war,” he added.
On Sunday, Mr Zelenskyy renewed his call for Western allies to continue supplying the country with air defence systems, saying that this week alone Ukraine had been bombed with nearly 700 guided bombs and more than 100 drones.
Earlier on Saturday, Russia claimed sovereignty over the nearby village of Lozuvatske, one of nearly a dozen villages it said it had taken control of in the Donetsk region this month.
The Kremlin has recently focused its forces on the Donetsk region, which it claims to have annexed months after launching a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.
Ukraine's General Staff said on Sunday morning that its forces had repelled 29 attacks in the area, where Russia is focusing its heavy offensive to push back Ukrainian forces.
