Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) exploded in the sky over Kyiv on May 8.
Reuters quoted Ukrainian officials early on May 8 as saying that Russia had organized a large-scale attack on the capital Kyiv and many other areas ahead of the May 9 Victory Day celebration.
Ukrainian officials say at least five people were injured in Russian strikes on Kyiv. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that three people were injured in an explosion in the Solomyanskyi district and two others were injured when the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fell in the Sviatoshyn district.
Kyiv’s military administration said the debris from the drone fell on the runway of Zhuliany airport, one of the Ukrainian capital’s two civilian airports, and did not cause a fire. It also said that in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, debris from the drone appeared to have hit a two-story building, causing damage.
A Russian missile also set fire to a food warehouse in the Black Sea city of Odessa, and explosions were reported in other parts of Ukraine. Serhiy Bratchuk, a spokesman for the Odessa military government, posted pictures on his Telegram channel of a large structure engulfed in flames.
Air raid warnings were sounded for several hours across about two-thirds of Ukraine from the night into the morning of May 8. Media also reported explosions in the Kherson region and the Zaporizhzhia region.
Russia has not confirmed the reports and has long denied targeting civilians. Vladimir Rogov, an official in Russia-backed Zaporizhzhia, said Russian forces attacked a warehouse and Ukrainian military positions in Orikhiv, a small town in the region.
The latest attacks come as Moscow prepares for a military parade to mark Victory Day on May 9, one of Russia's biggest holidays.
General Oleksandr Syrsky, commander of the Ukrainian army, said Russia had stepped up its heavy artillery bombardment of the city of Bakhmut. He also said Russia had begun using more advanced equipment and was regrouping its forces in the hope of taking full control of the area by May 9. General Syrsky has vowed to do everything possible to prevent that.
These moves come as a Ukrainian counter-offensive appears to be drawing near. The British newspaper The Independent on May 7 quoted Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Volodymyr Havrylov as saying that the Russian command would panic when the counter-offensive began.
Mr. Havrylov also highly valued the possibility that events this month or next will lead to a rapid collapse of Russia's military strategy, army or economy .
Russia has not yet responded to these statements.
