According to RT , on May 22, President Putin assigned the Russian Army to establish a "security buffer zone" in the area along the border with Ukraine.
"I have decided to create the necessary security buffer zone along the border. Our armed forces are actively carrying out this task," President Putin said at a meeting on the situation in Russia's border regions, including Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk. Additional measures to support residents in these areas were also discussed.

President Putin stressed that Russia was forced to create such a zone to protect civilians in border areas from long-range Ukrainian attacks.
"The Russian military will create a security zone that will be very difficult for the enemy to overcome with their weapons, primarily weapons of foreign origin, at a time we consider appropriate," President Putin said in March 2024.
Mr Putin's statement came after a Ukrainian attack on the town of Kursk left at least 12 civilians injured, including two children.
According to acting Kursk Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein, the attack targeted an area near the Kursk-Rylsk highway leading into the town.
Media reports said the attack involved a US-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket launcher.
Over the past two days, Kiev has launched a long-range drone attack deeper into Russian territory. According to the Russian Defense Ministry , a total of 485 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones have been shot down in the past 48 hours. At least 63 drones were intercepted in the Moscow Region, while the largest number were intercepted in the Orel Region.
