At least two people were killed and more than 100 injured when a train carrying 800 passengers collided with a Kamaz truck in the Volgograd region, 1,200km south of Moscow, causing eight carriages to derail.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry confirmed that the ship was en route from Kazan in the Republic of Tatarstan to the Adler region in the Black Sea. According to Reuters, the collision occurred in the Volgograd region, near Kotelnikovo station and about 1,200km south of Moscow.
More than 300 medical personnel were at the scene to treat the injured. Rescue helicopters were also mobilized. The death toll is likely to rise.
The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation. Russian Railways has accused the truck driver of a serious violation of traffic laws by crossing the railway level crossing despite warning lights.
The company added that the train driver applied emergency brakes but could not avoid the collision because of the close distance. At the time, the train was traveling at 65km/h.
