Konstantin Gavrilov, head of the Russian diplomatic mission for military security and arms control in Austria, said Moscow has the tools to counter the GLSDB smart bombs with a range of up to 160km that the US is about to deliver to Ukraine.
Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland announced that US-made GLSDB (Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb) munitions were on their way to the Ukrainian battlefield.
"Nuland came to Kiev to proudly announce that they would send GLSDB bombs to Ukraine. Yes, these are good and effective weapons, but they had already delivered them to Kiev. And we have found tools to counter these bombs," said Gavrilov.
According to the diplomat, Russia has learned that the US had previously sent GLSDB bombs to Ukraine for "testing fire" and they already know how to counter this weapon. However, Mr. Gavrilov did not give details about the weapon or how Russia could intercept the US GLSDB.
Previously, Reuters quoted informed sources as saying that Ukraine would soon receive a batch of long-range GLSDB bombs produced by Boeing, a weapon that can extend the range of attacks deep into Russian-controlled territory.
In the fall of 2022, the US decided to purchase Boeing's GLSDB bomb and supply it to Ukraine. Boeing produces the bomb together with the Swedish defense company SAAB.
Dubbed a "hybrid" weapon, the GLSDB bomb is created from a unique combination of a traditional bomb and a multiple rocket launcher.
Although it is a bomb, the GLDRS is launched from the ground, specifically from the HIMARS multiple launch rocket system or the M270 self-propelled gun and variants.
Ukraine desperately needs the GLDRS to increase the number of long-range missiles fired by HIMARS. Previously, the US had only sent Ukraine a relatively small number of ATACMS missiles with a range of 160km. The GLDRS has twice the range of the conventional rockets that Ukraine currently deploys from HIMARS, minus the ATACMS.
The GLSDB combines the M26 rocket engine with the GBU-38 bomb, turning it into a precision-guided ground-launched tactical rocket artillery.
The GLSDB consists of two main components, of which the warhead is the GBU-39 small diameter bomb equipped with an M26 rocket for launch from the ground. It is 3.9m long, 0.24m in diameter and weighs about 272kg.
