Admiring giant Mid-Autumn lanterns in Thanh Tuyen before Mid-Autumn Festival

According to research, Thanh Tuyen festival was initially just a spontaneous activity of the people from the Mid-Autumn Festival in 2004 in Tuyen Quang City. Up to now, after 20 years, the making of giant Mid-Autumn lantern models for children to perform on the streets has spread throughout the hamlets, villages, and residential groups of Tuyen Quang City to the districts in the province.

Mid-Autumn lantern models are built based on symbols in historical stories, folk legends and from the practical life and production of people in each historical period. Many models apply science and technology in a creative and modern way while still preserving traditional cultural identity.

Currently, lantern models of many communes, wards and residential groups in Tuyen Quang city are being urgently completed. People are contributing money, effort and ideas to create unique and strange Mid-Autumn lantern models to perform in the upcoming festival.

Mr. Vu Hoang Chau, residing in Tuyen Quang province, shared: "Making giant Mid-Autumn lantern models is not only a job to earn extra income, but it is also an indispensable tradition of Tuyen Quang people every Mid-Autumn Festival. The important thing to create a beautiful Mid-Autumn model is to know how to "breathe life" into it."

"When looking at Mid-Autumn lanterns, they must exude a sense of closeness and friendliness. For example, animals are often mischievous, so the drawings of parts such as hands, feet, eyes, noses, etc. should be as similar as possible to real life. Sometimes we can emphasize and stylize them, but in the end, the most important thing is still the soul...", Mr. Vu Hoang Chau added.

Ms. Dang Thu Huong (Group 6, Minh Xuan Ward, Tuyen Quang City) confided: "In the past, my family mainly made star lanterns and animals. To create these products, you have to be passionate about art and have a little knowledge of painting. In the past few years, my family decided to switch to making Mid-Autumn lantern models for Minh Xuan Ward. Realizing that our family's models have many unique features, gradually other residential groups in the area have come to order them. Now, some neighboring provinces have also come to order them."

According to Ms. Dang Thu Huong, up to now her family has received orders to make about 20 Mid-Autumn lantern models for residential groups, agencies and units.

"The most important step in making a model is that the craftsman must come up with an idea to make the model from the image on paper into real life so that it is vivid, colorful, and attracts the love of children and adults," said Ms. Huong.

To complete the Mid-Autumn lantern model, the craftsman must have an understanding of fine arts to coordinate colors in harmony, creating high aesthetics for the product.
