To prevent dengue fever, in addition to vaccination, people need to proactively implement other disease prevention measures. Thereby, ensuring health for themselves, their families and the community.
Warning of many cases of dengue shock
While taking care of her little daughter XN (10 years old) at the Department of Tropical Diseases, Dong Nai Children's Hospital, Ms. NTP (residing in Dong Hoa commune, Trang Bom district) said that her child had a fever, headache, and dizziness, but due to lack of knowledge, she left her child at home and bought medicine for her child to take. On the 5th day, seeing that her child was very tired, she took her to a private clinic near her house for examination and was diagnosed with pharyngitis. In the evening of the same day, seeing that her child was getting weaker and weaker, Ms. P. continued to take her to a private pediatrician for examination, and the doctor asked her to take her to the hospital immediately because the child was too weak. At this time, Ms. P. hurriedly took her child to Dong Nai Children's Hospital for emergency treatment.
In the first 5 months of 2025, the whole province recorded more than 2,600 cases of dengue fever, an increase of more than 2 times compared to the same period last year. Of which, the rate of children aged 15 and under with dengue fever accounted for 51.3%.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with low blood pressure, vomiting, fatigue, abdominal pain, slightly enlarged liver, and scattered hemorrhagic spots. The doctor diagnosed the patient with dengue fever with shock. Blood test results showed low platelets, low red blood cells, and slightly increased liver enzymes. The patient was immediately given emergency IV fluids and oxygen therapy. When the shock was gone, he was transferred to the Tropical Diseases Department for further treatment.
Specialist II Doctor Nguyen Thanh Quyen, Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Dong Nai Children's Hospital, said that for the past 2 weeks, the department has treated an average of nearly 30 patients with dengue fever every day and almost every day there are cases of shock. Most children admitted to the hospital have warning signs such as fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fatigue. Most children with dengue fever have not been vaccinated against the disease.
Doctor Quyen predicts that in the coming time, there will be a lot of rain and erratic weather, so the number of dengue fever cases will increase. Therefore, if parents see their children with high fever, vomiting, or fatigue, they should take them to the hospital immediately for examination. They should not let them stay at home or treat them on their own, because the disease can get worse at any time. In addition, children aged 4 and older should get vaccinated against dengue fever to prevent the disease.
The whole political system is involved.
Director of the Provincial Center for Disease Control, Dr. Tran Minh Hoa shared that in recent times, the health sector has implemented many measures to prevent dengue fever such as: monitoring cases, monitoring key points, destroying mosquito larvae, spraying chemicals on a large scale, and handling outbreaks. However, the biggest challenge in dengue fever prevention is the limited awareness of disease prevention among some people, especially in densely populated areas and boarding houses with poor environmental sanitation conditions.
Bien Hoa City is the locality with the highest number of dengue fever cases in the province in the first 5 months of this year, with more than 500 cases. Responding to ASEAN Dengue Fever Prevention Day, Bien Hoa City People's Committee has developed a plan to implement specific response activities. It calls on all levels, sectors, organizations and all people to actively destroy mosquito larvae, maintain hygiene in houses, workplaces, residential areas, and regularly check water containers to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. In addition, promote the Patriotic Hygiene Movement associated with building a civilized urban lifestyle, contributing to creating a healthy and safe living environment for today's and future generations.
Meanwhile, according to Vice Chairman of Nhon Trach District People's Committee Luong Huu Ich, in the first 5 months of this year, the district recorded nearly 300 cases of dengue fever. Recently, the locality has implemented the Environmental Sanitation and Mosquito Larva Eradication Campaign. At the same time, propaganda has been stepped up so that people understand the dangers of dengue fever and proactively improve personal hygiene, environmental sanitation, mosquito eradication, sleeping under mosquito nets... to prevent dengue fever in particular and other infectious diseases in general.
