Mr. Nguyen Quang Tao:

From Sergeant in the South Vietnamese Police Force to Lieutenant Colonel in the People's Public Security Force

On page 147 of the book "History of the Revolutionary Struggle of the Party Committee and People of Truong Xuan Ward, Tam Ky City (1930 - 1975)", there is a passage that reads: "With the motto of perseverance, persistence, continuity and widespread coverage, the Military Mobilization Committee of Tam Ky (formerly) district successfully infiltrated dozens of internal agents into the enemy ranks, gaining control of hundreds of bases consisting of soldiers, officers, and staff of the enemy's government system from villages and communes to the district level."

For example, they appointed comrades Nguyen Ba Tuan as Chairman of Ky Huong commune; Le Thai Thinh to the Ky Huong commune's administrative board; Tran Huong as Deputy Commune Head in charge of security; Nguyen Quang Tao to the police force; Nguyen Chung as Squad Leader of the Ky Huong militia…”.

Having embraced revolutionary ideals early on, while still in school, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tao (born in 1952) worked as a secret operative for the working team of Ward 4 (now Truong Xuan Ward, Tam Ky).

In 1973, Mr. Tạo was drafted into the army. At this time, following the organization's directives, his mother – a member of the Indochinese Communist Party – sold a 200-liter drum of peanut oil to secure a position in the puppet regime's police force. After being sent to Saigon for six months of professional training, he returned to work at the Quảng Tín Police Department.

By 1974, Mr. Tạo was transferred to the field police, no longer working in an office. “Given the situation, with support from the organization, his family raised some additional money to transfer him to the special police force. The organization's objective for him at that time was to ‘climb high and penetrate deep’ into enemy territory to gather intelligence,” Mr. Tạo recalled.

Having matured through trials within enemy territory, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tao was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam at a rather special time: February 27, 1975, nearly a month before the liberation of his homeland (March 24, 1975); preparing to launch a simultaneous uprising to liberate cities and ultimately liberate the South and unify the country on April 30, 1975.

After the liberation, Mr. Nguyen Quang Tao worked in the police force. He retired in 2003 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Upholding the spirit of dedication and continuous contribution of a Party member, he continued to participate in grassroots activities, serving as the Secretary of the Party Branch of Xuan Dong neighborhood (Truong Xuan ward) for nearly 15 years.

“From a police sergeant in the puppet regime to being admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam, there were times when I faced difficulties and extremely precarious situations. I overcame them and performed my duties well, especially in maintaining secrecy and ensuring the safety of the organization, my family, and my village. Joining the Party is a great honor for our generation. Regardless of the circumstances, I have absolute faith in the Party's leadership and am committed to continuously developing the role of a reputable Party member in the locality, contributing to enriching the achievements of the revolution in the new era,” Mr. Tạo shared.

Mr. Doan Tan Phat:

Being put on a "trial period" by the revolution.

His mother died in a US-backed military raid when Doan Tan Phat (born in 1955, Block 1, Vinh Dien Ward, Dien Ban Town) was just 10 years old. At that time, young Phat had to work as a servant and learn a trade in Da Nang .

During the Tet Offensive of 1968, Mr. Phat visited his home in the liberated zone (Duy Trinh, Duy Xuyen) and met Ms. Muoi (Doan Thi Thuy, who died in 1969 - PV), an officer of the Quang Da Special Zone Command, and asked to join the revolution. His only thought was to drive out all the enemy.

“She told me, ‘You’re still young, so do small tasks. Just go to Da Nang to learn a trade, and I’ll give you assignments…’ At the end of 1968, I met Ms. Muoi again. On the night of the 4th day of Tet in 1969, she took me from Duy Trinh to Tan Tay, Xuyen Chau to meet Mr. Truong Cong Tro, who was then a Standing Committee member of the Special Zone Youth Union. I was renamed ‘Trien,’ and the revolution ‘tested’ me with the task of acting as a legal liaison between the war zone and Da Nang City. I started my revolutionary work from there,” Mr. Phat recounted.

In 1971, Mr. Phat was transferred to the war zone, working at the Special Zone Youth Union Office. After enduring fierce trials, on September 2, 1972, Mr. Phat was honored to be admitted to the Youth Union. At the end of 1974, he was recommended to attend a Party membership training course and was admitted to the Party on May 25, 1975, at 150B Thong Nhat Street (now Le Duan Street, Da Nang City).

Having been sent to study culture and economic and commercial management, Mr. Phat worked at the Quang Nam - Da Nang Department of Commerce. Later, he transferred to Dien Ban and in 1994 he retired when the government implemented a policy of downsizing the workforce. After retirement, he actively participated in local movements and activities, and is currently the Chairman of the Elderly Association of Vinh Dien Ward.

“Being admitted into the Party is a great honor. I have clearly defined my goals and ideals. I strive to complete the tasks assigned by the Party, whether I am a specialist or hold a leadership position. Some tasks are very difficult, requiring creativity, bold thinking, and flexible application to successfully complete them,” Mr. Phat said.

Regarding the current streamlining of the organizational structure, which he himself was involved in and volunteered to implement exactly 30 years ago when the Party advocated for downsizing the workforce, he said: "I believe that our country will enter a new era of development, starting with the effective implementation of the revolution to streamline the organizational structure as stated by General Secretary To Lam."

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa:

Unwavering belief

Born into a homeland plagued by war and turmoil, at the age of 20, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa (born in 1944, in Hamlet 5, Tien Loc Commune, Tien Phuoc District) volunteered to join the local guerrilla forces, and later served in the army at Regiment 21, Division 2.

Mr. Hoa and his comrades traveled across various battlefields, from Quang Nam to Quang Ngai and up to Kon Tum. The famous battles of the 31st Regiment would not have been possible without the role of Mr. Hoa and his comrades – the soldiers who scouted the battlefields and prepared the ground for enemy attacks.

He was wounded many times in various battles, but the most serious injury occurred when he was in command of an assault on the enemy's radio command center and artillery positions during the Dak Gley campaign in Kon Tum in June 1968.

After this period, due to declining health, he returned to his hometown in 1969 and joined a working team in Tien Loc commune. During a mission, Mr. Hoa was wounded in an enemy ambush, captured, and exiled to Con Dao Island in 1971.

During his time in Con Dao prison from 1971 to 1973, Mr. Hoa recounted: "At that time, I and many of my comrades were brutally tortured by the enemy. They electrocuted, beat, and shackled our soldiers in an attempt to extract information. But we were determined not to reveal anything, even though our lives were in their hands."

"I thought I was going to die on Con Dao Island, but looking back, I don't know where I got the strength to survive and be released in 1973. After returning home and recuperating for a while, I rejoined the task force, continuing my reconnaissance duties to prepare the battlefield for the biggest campaign of the entire nation in the spring of 1975, the campaign to liberate the homeland and unify the country."

On March 8, 1975, while on duty with his comrades on the battlefield, Mr. Hoa received the Decision to be admitted into the Communist Party of Vietnam. On the battlefield, it was impossible to hold an admission ceremony, there was no oath under the flag and the portrait of President Ho Chi Minh, but in the heart of this communist soldier, the most powerful oath was the determination to fight and win this decisive battle against the enemy.

At that time, the Tien Loc commune Party cell, consisting of 5 members led by Comrade Nguyen Huu Phuoc as Secretary, led the attack force from Tien Loc to coordinate with other attack forces in liberating the Tien Phuoc district capital on March 10, 1975.

After liberation, in various positions, Mr. Hoa, along with the army and people of Tien Loc, united and worked together to overcome the consequences of bombs and mines, reclaim land, increase production, and build a revolutionary government. Fifty years since the liberation of his homeland also marks 50 years of unwavering loyalty to the Party for the steadfast Communist Party member Nguyen Van Hoa.

Mr. Dang Mau Thiet:

Keeping the oath taken on April 30, 1975

Born and raised in a family with a rich revolutionary tradition, Mr. Dang Mau Thiet (born in 1950, Phuoc Xuyen neighborhood, Nam Phuoc town, Duy Xuyen district) joined the local guerrilla forces at the young age of 16.

On February 22, 1968, he joined Unit C1 of the Duy Xuyen District Military Command, participating in battles in the Central and Western battlefields. Notable achievements include the ambush at Dinh Canal, eliminating a US-backed South Vietnamese platoon; and the attack on the headquarters of the Duc Duc District Committee of the Nationalist Party…

During the resistance war against the US, Mr. Dang Mau Thiet consistently demonstrated resourcefulness, courage, and tenacious fighting spirit, readily sacrificing himself for the ideals of the national liberation struggle. Therefore, he was considered for Party membership. The day he was admitted to the Party was a very special day, as it was also the day of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country.

Mr. Thiet shared: “At 8 a.m. on April 30, 1975, the Party branch held a ceremony to admit new Party members. Reading the oath before the Party flag, the national flag, and the portrait of President Ho Chi Minh was the most sacred thing in my life.”

Every word, every sentence is deeply etched in my heart, nurturing my will and motivating me to dedicate my entire life to the noble ideals of the Party. That oath is a promise to the Party and the Party branch; a commitment to loyalty and a lifelong commitment to the goals and ideals of the Party.

At the end of the ceremony, people shook hands, hugged tightly, and offered congratulations. I felt a surge of joy and pride, as if I had been given renewed motivation and confidence to move forward on the path ahead, striving to contribute even more to be worthy of being a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam.”

Mr. Thiet's joy and honor were multiplied many times over when, shortly afterwards, our main army units simultaneously attacked the inner city of Saigon from all directions, seizing key enemy targets and achieving the historic great victory of Spring 1975, completely liberating the South and unifying the country.

In 1993, Mr. Thiet retired and was recognized as a war invalid. Returning to civilian life, he continued to actively contribute his opinions to the building of the Party and government. He was also trusted and elected to the position of Deputy Secretary of the Party branch and Head of Xuyen Tay village (now Phuoc Xuyen neighborhood, Nam Phuoc town).

The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of his dedication to the Party. For Mr. Thiet, the oath he took under the Party flag that year remains intact in the heart of this soldier of Uncle Ho.

The story of the "Little Guerrilla Girl" in Quang Nam province.

“To join the Party, we had to go through arduous trials. After the victory at Thuong Duc, I and another female guerrilla fighter were assigned by our superiors to escort 82 prisoners to An Diem. That was the decisive test for us to be admitted into the ranks of the Party.”

At 73 years old, Mrs. Huynh Thi Hai (residing in Ban Mai village, Ba commune, Dong Giang district) still vividly remembers the moment she was assigned a particularly important political task after the victory at Thuong Duc in 1974. According to Mrs. Hai, this task was a challenging journey before she was officially admitted into the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Ms. Hai is from Duy Phuoc (Duy Xuyen). In 1972, during the fierce war, while serving as a local guerrilla fighter, Ms. Hai was sent by the organization to attend a literacy class in Thanh My (Nam Giang). After studying for a while, Ms. Hai suffered from a persistent high fever, interrupting her studies.

A year later, in 1973, Ms. Hai was assigned to the Quang Da Production Board (established on March 12, 1973, renamed Quyet Thang State Farm in 1975) in Dong Giang, tasked with economic development and participating in production activities, before being deployed for a "test" in the Thuong Duc Campaign at the end of 1974.

“During the Thượng Đức Liberation Campaign, we were in the rear with the initial task of helping civilians evacuate from dangerous areas. Later, I, along with Nguyễn Thị Hải, from Đại Lộc, were assigned the task of escorting 82 prisoners of war from Thượng Đức to An Điềm.”

"Throughout the journey, we carried backpacks on our shoulders and held guns in our hands, 'leading' the prisoners without daring to be careless. When we arrived, many people were surprised, because they didn't think two small female guerrillas could complete this important mission," Mrs. Hai recounted.

After completing her courageous ordeal, Mrs. Hai returned to the Quyet Thang Farm to continue her work of increasing agricultural production. At that time, the Trung Mang area was a desolate, mountainous region of forest. The population was sparse, with almost only the "farm village" existing.

Before going to the Battle of Thuong Duc, Mrs. Hai spent more than three months attending a Party membership orientation class. Upon returning from that trip, she was honored to be admitted into the Party by the Party Cell of Team 6 - Quyet Thang Farm.

“I remember the induction ceremony was held on the night of February 2, 1975. It was very solemn. The entire Party cell of Team 6 attended. The reason it was held at night was because during the day we had to perform production duties,” Mrs. Hai recalled.

Time flies, and in the blink of an eye, 50 years have passed since Mrs. Hai was admitted to the Party. Having spent more than half her life struggling to make ends meet, Mrs. Hai still remembers that moment vividly. "Being honored to join the Party is the greatest happiness for me, something I will never forget in my life," Mrs. Hai said, holding her Party membership card in her hand, with a sense of pride and emotion.

Building and reforming the Party - a story from 50 years ago.

In the spring of 2025, marking the 50th anniversary of the liberation of our homeland and the reunification of the country, on our journey to meet Party members from Quang Nam who were admitted to the Party in 1975, we had the opportunity to hear stories of Party building in the early years after liberation that still resonate today.

According to data from the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee's Organization Department, there are currently 279 surviving Party members in the province who joined the Party in 1975, out of a total of 380 outstanding sons and daughters of the homeland who joined the Party ranks during that historic month of May.

Through the images of the Party members we had the opportunity to meet, each of their individual stories contributed to the story of the Provincial Party Committee in the first year after liberation, building a new life. And the aspect we are discussing here is the building and rectification of the Party during the period when the entire Party and people were focused on protecting the achievements of the revolution and gradually restoring and rebuilding the homeland.

In his story, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Chien (born in 1949, a member of the Party Branch of Block 2, Vinh Dien Ward, Dien Ban District) shared that after a period of training and testing at the Dien Minh Commune Working Team (now Dien Minh Ward), on February 15, 1975, he was honored to be admitted into the Party. After the liberation of his homeland, a very small number of cadres and Party members inevitably experienced temporary wavering, but the Party immediately rectified the situation and then seriously organized the inspection and evaluation of the results of the rectification within the Party.

Based on the timeframe Mr. Chien recounted, and to ensure accuracy, we consulted the Chronicle of Historical Events of the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee, searching for the story of Party building and rectification in 1975, and we increasingly felt the relevance of the story to this day.

Less than three months after the liberation of their homeland, recognizing the presence of erroneous phenomena and ideologies within the Party, on June 18, 1975, the Standing Committee of the Quang Da Special Zone Party Committee issued Directive No. 31 to correct and prevent these issues; calling on cadres and Party members to uphold the fine traditions of the Party Committee, overcome difficulties, unite in solidarity, and build a revolutionary moral stance of "Diligence, Frugality, Integrity, and Selflessness."

While self-criticism and criticism within the Party have been intensified in recent years, 50 years ago, while overcoming the consequences of war and building a new life, the Standing Committee of the Quang Da Special Zone Party Committee launched a movement throughout the Party organization to self-criticize and criticize the erroneous thoughts of each individual.

Based on that, depending on the severity of the mistake, disciplinary action will be taken within the Party or agency, or prosecution will be initiated. Each agency will review and resolutely remove from the organization those bad elements and opportunists who have not improved despite education; implementing the "four managements": managing ideology, managing work, managing relationships, and managing daily life.

Recognizing the task of building a strong Party from the grassroots level, and strong grassroots Party branches from Party members, on August 21, 1975, the Standing Committee of the Quang Da Special Zone Party Committee issued Directive No. 32 on promoting the movement to improve the quality of Party members and build strong grassroots Party branches.

The directive aims to ensure that every Party member thoroughly understands the Party Charter; to build close ties with the masses, gain their trust and prestige, and to organize and lead them in effectively implementing the Party's policies. At the same time, it aims to build each Party branch into a leading nucleus for the masses at the grassroots level.

On October 2, 1975, the Standing Committee of the Quang Da Special Zone Party Committee issued Directive No. 37, requiring each Party branch and Party cell to hold meetings and review the situation since studying Directive No. 31 dated June 18, 1975. The entire Party organization seriously conducted an assessment of the internal struggle within agencies and units, as well as the management, education, and inspection of Party members in each Party branch and Party cell…

Drawing inspiration from the story of Party building 50 years ago, during what was considered the most challenging period, we can reflect on it today to encourage every Party member to strive even harder to improve themselves.
