The European Parliament allocates seats based on political groups
The European Parliament's new political group called "Europe Belongs to Sovereign Nations" was officially launched on July 10 with 25 parliamentarians from eight European Union (EU) member states, according to Politico on July 11.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party heads the new political group. The participating parties include Poland's Alliance Party, Bulgaria's Renaissance Party, France's Reconquista Party, Slovakia's Republican Movement Party, Hungary's Our Common Home Movement, Lithuania's People's Alliance and Justice Party, and the Czech Republic's Freedom and Direct Democracy Party.
This means that the European Parliament has seen two far-right political groups formed within days of each other.
New far-right force emerges in European Parliament
On July 8, the National Rally (RN) party of Ms. Marine Le Pen in France joined hands with the Fidesz party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to form the political group "Patriots for Europe". This political group replaced the now-dissolved far-right group Identity and Democracy.
Of the two new political groups, "Europe Belongs to Sovereign Nations" promises to take a more radical line than "Patriots for Europe".
With the far-right movement gaining ever-stronger ground in the European Parliament, centrist and left-wing political groups are expected to move quickly to prevent far-right members from holding any influential role at the heart of European politics over the next five years.
