The fields along National Highway 4C and Provincial Road 176 in Ha Giang are wearing new colors, woven with the charming purple, white, and pink colors of buckwheat flowers.
Buckwheat, or rye, is a plant grown in the highlands of northern Vietnam.
This plant belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae), the petals are clustered together in a pyramid shape, in the middle is the buckwheat seed. The color of the buckwheat flower changes with each stage. When it first blooms, the flower is pure white, then turns to light pink, purple pink and then dark red.
Therefore, tourists on Ha Giang tours can come to see these flower fields blooming most beautifully from mid-October to mid-November, some years from mid-September the flowers have begun to have white spots.
In recent years, buckwheat flowers have been considered one of the main tourism products of the Dong Van stone plateau. This year, the 8th Buckwheat Flower Festival will open on November 9, 2024 in Dong Van district (Ha Giang) with the theme "Land of nostalgic flowers".
The Buckwheat Flower Festival is an important cultural event to honor the beauty of the typical flower of the rocky plateau. It is an annual event that is eagerly awaited every late autumn and early winter - the time when buckwheat flowers bloom at their most beautiful on the Dong Van rocky plateau.
According to the representative of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ha Giang, the total number of tourists coming to Ha Giang during the 10th "Buckwheat Flower" Festival in 2024 (5 days from November 7 to November 11, 2024) is estimated at 42,000, of which 3,500 are foreign visitors and 38,500 are domestic visitors.
To prepare for this year's festival, 4 mountainous districts in the northern part of Ha Giang province have planted nearly 400 hectares of buckwheat flowers. The blooming period will last from October to December, with the flowers reaching their peak during the festival.

Ms. Anh Nguyet, a tourist from Hanoi , excitedly shared her feelings when coming to the buckwheat flower season in full bloom: "I am a person who loves flowers, so when I stood in the middle of a flower field like this, I was extremely excited.
The whole space is vast, filled with small, gentle flowers. This is an experience that I think anyone who loves flowers should try once in their life.
