Cristiano Ronaldo was present to attend a conference in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, where preparations are being made for the opening day of its first Esports World Cup in 2024. The Al-Nassr striker also met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman at the event.
Ronaldo shared his feelings on his social networks
"It was an honor to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman again and it was great to join the panel today to discuss the future of esports and the launch of the first Esports World Cup to be held in Saudi Arabia next year," Ronaldo wrote on his social media.
The Esports World Cup will be an annual event that showcases the most popular games in the world and also has the biggest prize pool in esports competitions in general.
In its bid to become a global sporting power, the Gulf state is expected to be selected as the host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Interest has also been shown in its bid to host the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2035.
“The eSports World Cup is a natural next step in Saudi Arabia’s journey to becoming the leading global hub for eSports,” said Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He is said to be an avid Call of Duty gamer and Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in the sector since Mohammed bin Salman became first in line to the throne six years ago.
Last year, the crown prince announced a $38 billion investment strategy for the kingdom’s Savvy Games Group, owned by the kingdom ’s sovereign wealth fund. The goal is to create 39,000 eSports-related jobs by 2030.
Saudi Arabia is also keen to become a "game developer haven" where they can produce new titles that "promote Arab culture." It's also part of a national esports strategy, aiming for 30 of the world's most competitive games to be produced in domestic studios by 2030.
