People with high cholesterol, why should they eat peas?

Eating foods high in harmful fats such as processed meat, red meat, and greasy foods will increase blood cholesterol levels. Not only that, eating a lot of sugar also indirectly increases cholesterol. This is because the liver will convert excess sugar in the body into fat, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Peas are rich in fiber, vitamins and phytochemicals that may lower blood cholesterol

High blood cholesterol levels can lead to the formation of plaques in the artery walls. These plaques can disrupt blood flow, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Peas are a rich source of nutrients that not only provide many beneficial nutrients but also help reduce blood cholesterol. One cup of peas contains more than 8 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein. This type of bean is also a good source of B vitamins. In particular, vitamin B3, also known as niacin, has been shown to reduce cholesterol.

Niacin works by lowering LDL “bad” cholesterol while increasing HDL “good” cholesterol. This reduces the likelihood of plaque buildup in the artery walls associated with LDL “bad” cholesterol. More HDL “good” cholesterol helps promote the delivery of LDL “bad” cholesterol to the liver for removal.

Adults need 14 to 16 mg of niacin per day. People with high blood cholesterol may need more niacin. Therefore, your doctor may prescribe high doses of niacin in combination with a statin drug to increase "good" HDL cholesterol and control "bad" LDL cholesterol.

In addition to niacin, peas also contain other nutrients that are also very effective in lowering cholesterol. These are fiber and some phytochemicals. A study published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition found that eating 150 grams of peas a day can help reduce blood cholesterol, blood pressure and inflammation in the body.

Peas are usually cooked by boiling. Experts note that people should only boil peas until they are just cooked. Overcooking can reduce the niacin content in peas. However, if you use the water to cook peas to make soup, you can still take advantage of the niacin source of peas that has dissolved in the water, according to Healthline .
