| Rice fields belonging to many households in Thuong Minh commune have been affected by landslides. |
In the central fields of Thuong Minh commune, we saw hundreds of meters of rice, corn, and other crops grown by local people along the stream that had been severely eroded after heavy rains in 2025 and previous years. Many households lost nearly half of their rice cultivation area. The water flowing down from the streams carried soil, rocks, and mud, causing the already weak embankments of the rice paddies to collapse.
Mr. Hoang Van Cuong, from Ban Xa village, shared: "Every year there are landslides due to heavy rain, but it has never been as severe as this year. The land has been washed away, and the rice fields of my family and many other households are shrinking. We don't know how we will manage to plant rice next season. We hope the government will allocate funds to build embankments to preserve the agricultural land of the people."
Landslides affecting agricultural land are not only occurring in Thuong Minh, but also in the communes of Cho Ra, Ba Be, Dong Phuc, and others, with the risk of further landslides remaining. Due to the steep terrain, weak soil, and inadequate irrigation systems, many rice fields along streams in the highlands lack retaining walls. When heavy and prolonged rains occur, strong currents erode the soil, sweeping away entire plots of land. Each landslide results in the loss of not only land but also labor, seeds, fertilizers, and even food supplies for the following year.

| Large areas of agricultural land near rivers and streams in Thuong Minh commune have been affected by landslides. |
Mr. Ly Van Truong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thuong Minh commune, said: "In recent years, many areas of people's rice fields have been eroded by heavy rains and floods. If we don't build embankments in time, the area of agricultural land will continue to shrink. The local government has requested support from higher levels of government for funding to build embankments to protect agricultural land, especially in vulnerable areas with large fields. However, due to limited funding, the investment has not met the actual needs. Currently, the locality has reviewed and compiled a list of locations with a high risk of landslides to propose that the province support investment. In the meantime, the commune is mobilizing people to use rocks, sandbags, and bamboo to temporarily reinforce the embankments."
Investing in the construction of sturdy embankments and canals is essential to protect agricultural land in highland areas. However, construction costs are high, while local budgets are limited, so it needs to be integrated into various programs and projects. Besides investing in infrastructure, localities also need to strengthen communication and guidance to encourage people to improve their fields and plant bamboo and other similar plants to create fences, contributing to the preservation of natural land.
