The Andrology Center at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital ( Hanoi ) reported that doctors at the hospital recently admitted and surgically treated a 70-year-old male patient from Thanh Hoa who had lost almost all of his penile skin and his right testicle.
Dr. Trinh Hoang Giang, Deputy Director of the Andrology Center at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, who directly performed the surgery on the patient, said that the wound caused by the animal bite, which had a high risk of infection, had been cleaned and debrided. The patient needed surgery to cover the penile skin, and new penile skin would form after 3 months.
Dr. Trinh Hoang Giang, Deputy Director of the Center for Andrology, examines a patient who lost his right testicle due to a pig attack.
According to Dr. Trinh Hoang Giang, injuries to the external genitalia caused by animal bites are rare in andrology. These injuries can result from various causes, including traffic accidents, falls from heights, or sports injuries such as being kicked in the scrotum or penis.
In daily life, injuries to the penis and scrotum can occur due to being bitten, cut, or torn off by others out of jealousy… Some depressed individuals even self-mutilate their external genitalia.
According to the Andrology Center, doctors have noted cases of genital injuries often caused by dog and pig bites. Dogs frequently bite the genitals of children and the elderly while they are using the toilet. Genital injuries can also occur during pig castration (because during castration, the pig is often held upside down between the thighs; the pig struggles and bites the penis of the person holding it). In this situation, the penis is often completely severed.
Additionally, genital injuries can result from attacks by sows biting after farrowing when they try to retrieve piglets. The aforementioned male patient is an example of this.
Doctors at the Andrology Center advise that people need to ensure workplace safety, and livestock enclosures must have sufficiently high fences to prevent animals from attacking people. When in direct contact with livestock, personal protective equipment must be used. If injuries to the scrotum and penis occur, people should immediately go to specialized andrology facilities for timely treatment.
