Mr. Vijay Menon, 62 years old, lives in New Delhi (India). Due to severe headache, he was taken to Narayana Superspeciality Hospital in Gurgaon city, New Delhi on May 1 for treatment, according to Hindustan Times (India).
Vijay Menon's organs have given new life to five others
"The patient was admitted in an unconscious state and complained of severe headache," said Swadesh Kumar, medical superintendent at the hospital.
Doctors performed a CT scan and immediately transferred the patient to the intensive care unit (ICU). He had suffered a spontaneous brain hemorrhage. This is a condition in which blood vessels in the brain burst, causing blood to spill into surrounding tissues.
A few hours later, the man was brain dead. Doctors had no way to save him. However, they realized that many of his organs could be saved if donated. Therefore, the hospital suggested to the family that they donate their organs.
The family understood that Mr. Menon was a humanitarian and willing to help others while he was alive, so they agreed to donate his organs. His liver, 2 kidneys, heart and corneas saved 5 people.
The liver was successfully transplanted into a 22-year-old girl suffering from Wilson’s disease, a congenital liver disease. She is also being treated at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. Due to her serious illness since childhood, the girl was unable to attend school. This liver transplant has given her new hope in life.
One kidney was transported and transplanted overnight to a 20-year-old girl named Shivani, who had been on dialysis for the past five years. The remaining organs, including a kidney, heart and cornea, will be transplanted at other hospitals under the coordination of the National Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (NOTTO), according to Hindustan Times .
