In late January, he was visiting relatives when he suddenly became dizzy and collapsed. His wife, Xie Suhua, immediately took him to a major hospital in the city. He was diagnosed with a cerebral infarction.

"The blood vessels in his cerebellum, vermis and a major artery in his brain were narrowed, leading to an acute stroke. He needs to be hospitalized for observation for 10 to 14 days," said the treating doctor.

Ms. Xie said Mr. Yang works as a cleaner and she has no stable job. Their income is only about 3,000 yuan (equivalent to 10.4 million VND) a month. Mr. Yang’s mother, in her 90s, has to support the rent with her pension.

Their son is working in another city and cannot come home to celebrate Lunar New Year with his family.

When she was hospitalized, Ms. Xie paid a deposit of 2,000 yuan (over 6.9 million VND), but after only one week of treatment, the medical expenses increased to 10,000 yuan (34.8 million VND).

"This amount is beyond our financial capacity, so we plan to call for help from the community through a fundraising website," she said. It is not yet clear how much Yang's total treatment costs will be.

Yang started donating blood in 2005, and has donated a total of 313 times, helping at least 622 people. He is currently the province's top blood donor, with his most recent donation being on January 18.

Sharing the reason for donating blood, Yang said it was a passion that stemmed from his childhood dream of becoming a doctor. "I can't become a doctor, but donating blood is also a way to save people," he said.

Ms. Xie always supports her husband and believes that donating blood is a noble act. "He feels happy when he does it, and it makes me happy too," she shared. After each blood donation, she always prepares nutritious meals to help her husband recover.

Yang's story has attracted attention on Chinese social media platforms, with many expressing sympathy and hoping the community will join hands to help him overcome this difficult period.

"He has helped so many people. I hope society will not abandon him now," one netizen commented.
