With this behavior, you will definitely score points in your boss's eyes whether you refuse or accept the job.

During the holiday, Xiao Zhang was having dinner with his girlfriend when a text message popped up on his phone. He opened it and his expression suddenly changed. It turned out to be a text message from his boss: “Xiao Zhang, are you free now?” After much hesitation, Xiao Zhang decided to turn a blind eye, pretending not to see it and not replying.

The next day at work, as soon as he entered the office, Xiao Zhang was reprimanded by his boss in front of all the employees for not replying to his boss's messages and for his inappropriate attitude. Xiao Zhang quickly explained that he was busy and did not read the messages, and that he did not intentionally not reply. However, his boss still refused to let it go and continued to make things difficult for Xiao Zhang for the next week.

Obviously, Xiao Zhang’s biggest mistake was not answering his boss’s “free” or “not free” question in a timely manner. In fact, if you want to solve this workplace problem, you must understand these two points.

  1. Not replying to messages promptly is a taboo in the workplace!

Whether at work or in life, whether you are free or not, you must reply to messages from your leader. You don't have to reply immediately, but you can't ignore them either.

On holidays, many people will be like Xiao Zhang, thinking that after a busy period, it is finally time to rest and of course put work aside. However, the boss texting without replying is definitely a manifestation of low EQ.

Maybe on holidays, the leader asks if you are free not to assign tasks but simply wants to invite you to a meal or chat. If you know these things, are you still afraid? Moreover, if you are a leader, but when you urgently need employees to handle the work, you cannot find anyone. What would you think?

Seriously, if there is a real emergency and the leader cannot find you, they will never find you again. That is a sign that your career path will not be able to develop, or even be fired because you do not create value for their company.

So remember: At work, not replying to your boss's messages is a big no-no. Whether you're free or not, you should reply to your boss to let them know that you value them and the company.

  1. Maximize benefits when saying yes, maximize possibilities when saying no

When your boss asks you, "Are you free?", you can first answer, "Is there anything you need to do, boss?". Then, depending on your boss's answer, you can choose to accept or decline. And this can be divided into 3 situations:

Scenario 1: If the issue being addressed by the leader is very important and you are really free, you can agree.

Of course, you can't just answer "yes" or "okay". At this point, to maximize your benefits, not only meet the needs of the leader but also demonstrate your own value, you can try answering like this: "Yes, I'm following up on a project" or planning for next week's project. But if you need to handle it right away, I'll take it. I'll try to finish it soon."

This answer shows that even though it is a day off, you still care about your work and spend time developing yourself. Moreover, this way also makes your boss feel your enthusiasm and appreciate you. From there, you create a good impression with your boss. They will also take note of this and may give you priority in work over others.

Situation 2: If the task your boss asks you to handle is very important but you really don't have time, politely decline.

At this point, you should not just say “sorry boss, I’m busy”, but clearly explain what you are busy with so that your boss can understand and sympathize. You can try to respond as follows:

“Sir, I can indeed do this, but I am currently busy with family matters and cannot handle it right away. I'm sorry, boss.”

Or if it’s an urgent matter, you can contact other colleagues to see if they can take on the task. If someone is available and can handle the task your boss has assigned, you can send a message like this:

“If you're in a hurry, I can recommend Y (someone who can do it) to try it out and I'll also help give some suggestions along the way. Is that okay with you, boss?”

Such an answer shows that you are a skillful person, able to handle problems flexibly. At the same time, it shows your sincere attitude.

Scenario 3: If your boss's messages are just about non-work related matters, consider them accordingly.

If it is not related to your work, you should consider it depending on the situation. If it is within your ability and you are free, you should accept to score points with your boss. If it is beyond your ability, explain clearly to your boss and they will understand and sympathize with your refusal.

In fact, when dealing with leaders, the most important thing is the right attitude. Your learning attitude and progressive spirit will determine the speed of your development. Sometimes, it is your ingenuity that will open up your career path.
