The one who keeps the dream poem

Over 40 years of writing poetry with hundreds of poems published in newspapers and magazines, Nguyen Xuan Tu is very "economical" in publishing poetry. The poetry collection Tin, Yeu - Writers Association Publishing House 2025 - is only his 4th poetry collection to be published.

The one who keeps the dream poem

Those who love his poetry must have the same opinion as me: Nguyen Xuan Tu's poetry still retains its soulful, rustic, and sincere qualities. In his poetry, love for the homeland, people, and life always blend together. The verses are filled with the scent of the fields and wind or the immense sentiment, at some moment in the night a fragrant flower blooms. In the morning sun, the flower quietly spreads its fragrance and shows its color. A close friend stops by, on the doorstep, enjoying tea, admiring the flowers, humming the verses of poetry...

The collection of poems Tin, Yeu is mainly in six-eight and five-word verses. Six-eight is soft and simple. Five-word verses are concise, conveying ideas and feelings. Like the earth and sky with four seasons, the opening pages are filled with spring colors, the poet opens his heart to welcome spring, welcoming the harmony of heaven and earth in a new moment: “I open the door wide/Welcome the new spring into the house” (Spring knocks on the door).

Spring happiness in Nguyen Xuan Tu's poetry is full of joy, willing to share with humanity. However, to have that happiness, one must go through many years of hardship: "Thank you to heaven and earth/Many fragrant flowers, sweet fruits/Through many generations/From ups and downs, bitterness" (Spring Happiness).

Poetry is the person, poetry accompanies Nguyen Xuan Tu throughout his life. But his poetry is not flamboyantly displayed, sometimes hidden, latent. Poetry incarnates into the subconscious to give birth, to liberate. The 5-word verses seem light but are heavy with meaning and creative poetic ideas:

Poetry goes with the years/Diving into a human life/Poetry dives to then rise/Spring comes, my dear” (Diving).

Nguyen Xuan Tu was always passionate about poetry. Happiness came when good poetic ideas flooded back to him in his dreams, he felt like he had picked them up and kept them. So when he woke up, he felt like he was dreaming. That was also a happy encounter through the poet's verses: "Last night I had a dream/Picked up good and strange poetic ideas/Rejoicing in the joy of discovery/Waking up, he felt like he was dreaming" (Picked up Poems).

Through this collection of poems, Nguyen Xuan Tu is a person who clearly feels about life, recognizes the true, eternal values of life. The poem as the main theme of the collection shows two things: Trust and Love. Both are capitalized. Our ancestors were very reasonable when using the two words trust and love. Only with trust can there be love, without trust is the opposite. But having both of these things is not easy. We must understand the truth of life that no one gets everything, no one loses everything. Understanding will make us feel at ease so that we are not greedy, angry, or ignorant. We must reach a certain level to be able to trust and love. When we have enough, our hearts will be at peace, life will be peaceful and carefree:

Heaven does not give anyone everything/ Does not take anything from anyone/ Spring has come, the sky and earth are so beautiful/ Calms my heart with Faith and Love” (Faith and Love).

A notable part of Nguyen Xuan Tu's poetry is the lands he passed through, leaving behind lyrical and profound verses of a sensitive soul. These poems are all short, carrying poetic sentiments or conveying messages of life. For example, with Da Lat, he wrote: "My soul is like awake, like in a trance/Someone's shadow faintly comes and goes in the mist"; But with Yen Tu, the poet expressed his admiration and love for the Buddhist King Tran Nhan Tong: "The high mountains are covered with mist/The word Heart, the word Virtue shine forever/Teaching people to love Religion, love Life/"Peace the people, govern the country" is bright and lasting".

Once a soldier, when he went to Truong Sa, the poet was moved by the sound of the temple bell:

Mixing with the wordless ocean waves/The bell sounds like a message, like arousing feelings/Spring rain on the peaceful island/Far and near islands make me love the temple bell even more” (Temple bell in Truong Sa).

The precious thing is that in his poetry collections, Nguyen Xuan Tu always has good poems about his homeland and country. He always loves his homeland and is deeply attached to his homeland, Quang Tri: "The people of the homeland are kind and tolerant/ I love my homeland, I love my homeland so much/ Even if I go to the ends of the earth and the sky/ My love for my homeland will always be passionate in me" (Visiting my homeland).

Nguyen Xuan Tu's poems are not only full of love but also have many profound and bright ideas. Drinking coffee with friends is a common thing, poets have also written many poems about coffee, but writing only 4 lines to get a good poem is very remarkable. Whether sweet or bitter, chatting animatedly or silently is also a way of speaking to make the drop of coffee more meaningful:

Coffee is just an excuse/A place to meet and confide/Bitter drops but life is always sweet/Together, sometimes in silence...” (Coffee with friends).

Believe and Love are like the poet's whispers, bringing readers to lands and people, to see the near and far, to feel happier and more sympathetic. That is also the happiness of human life, the happiness of poetic life when the author portrays himself in poetry in a smooth, self-mocking yet proud and content way, satisfied with what he has in life:

No jostling, living leisurely/Photography - Poetry - Newspaper makes life more beautiful/Looking up, I'm not as good as others/Satisfied with the life I've lived/Optimistic, emotions are sublime/At seventy, I'm still like... spring” (Six-eight verse at seventy).

Congratulations to the poet at a rare age that seems to be... Spring and the happiness of life, with moments of sublimation to give life beautiful verses.
