The house of Mr. Pham Van Tuong, 42 years old, H're ethnic, is solidly built and located in the middle of a land area of nearly 500m2 . Since moving from the house at the foot of PaPon mountain with high risk of landslides to the Go Than resettlement area, his family's life has changed and improved day by day.

"In the past, there was a risk of landslides at the foot of the mountain, which was very difficult and arduous. Coming here, the roads are wide, the water is clean, and the electricity is stable, so our daily life has changed a lot," said Mr. Tuong, adding that his family's economy has improved a lot.

Mr. Pham Van Tuong said that along with an area of about 1,000m2 for rice cultivation, his family also grows cassava and about 1ha of acacia. During the off-season, he goes to cut acacia trees for hire for households in the village, in the commune or works as a bricklayer, earning a few hundred thousand dong a day.

"There are 4 people in the family, the oldest child has just joined the army, my wife works at a company in VSIP Quang Ngai Industrial Park, nearly 40km away from home, and only comes home on weekends" - Mr. Tuong said, adding that the couple's annual income is also several tens of millions of dong.

Not far from Mr. Tuong's house is Mr. Dinh Van Trich's house. When we arrived, he had just returned from working in the forest. Every day, when there are households harvesting acacia in the forest, he drives a car to transport acacia for hire for the people, earning an average income of about 400-500 thousand VND.

"Life here is so good, the roads and space are open and there is no need to worry about storms" - Mr. Trich said and said that there are 4 people in the family, his wife is also working for a company with a salary of 6-7 million VND. One of his children has just been working in Japan for 8 months and has just sent 200 million VND home.

Go Than resettlement area, Nghia Son commune, Tu Nghia district, Quang Ngai province has completed investment and handed over to local management and use since 2018 with a total approved investment of 14 billion VND; arranged for households affected by natural disasters. Up to now, 43 households have been allocated land and built stable houses by Nghia Son commune People's Committee in Go Than resettlement area.

In addition to allocating land to households to build houses in resettlement areas, the Department of Rural Development has coordinated with the locality to support each household to build a house with an amount of 20 million VND/household from the central budget to create conditions for people to soon stabilize their lives.

The first commune to meet new rural standards

Thanks to changing awareness and hard work, the lives of 43 H're households in the Go Than resettlement area are becoming more and more prosperous and developed. Poverty has receded, and the daily lives of the people here have changed rapidly. Along with the development of hybrid acacia, cassava, and other crops, scattered tree planting, and exploitation of various types of wood... have also been focused on development.

Mr. Pham Van Thech - Vice Chairman of Nghia Son Commune People's Committee said that each person when moving to Go Than resettlement area is given land of 400m2 or more. Along with that, regarding agricultural land, each household is divided at least 1ha of forestry land and about 1,000m2 of rice land to ensure food.

"After relocating households living in the cracked RaPon mountain area, which is at high risk of landslides, to the Go Than resettlement area, people's income is generally more secure than before, especially ensuring people's lives and property," said Mr. Thech.

According to Mr. Thech, the area where people live at the foot of PaPon Mountain previously had all built solid houses. When they moved to the resettlement area, they had to rebuild their houses. This was the most difficult thing for the households, but to ensure safety, all households agreed to move to the resettlement area.

Along with having to spend a large amount of money to build houses in the resettlement area, due to the small residential land area, people here are not allowed to raise livestock such as buffalo, cows, pigs but only chickens and ducks.

As a mountainous commune, 98% of households are H're ethnic people, knowledge of agricultural production is limited, so local authorities at all levels have increased training and support knowledge on rice and acacia planting; thereby helping people grasp farming techniques, focus on intensive investment, and improve crop productivity.

"Previously, we grew rice three times a year, but there were years when we still didn't have enough to eat. After returning from agricultural training, people learned how to take care of rice. Now, we grow two rice crops on an area of 1,000 square meters and get dozens of bags of rice. Currently, the whole commune has a surplus of rice," said Mr. Tuong.

From a mountainous commune with many difficulties, Nghia Son commune is changing day by day. Notably, this is also the first mountainous commune in Quang Ngai province to achieve new rural standards in 2017. Nghia Son commune is taken by Tu Nghia district as a model for other communes to follow in building new rural areas and aiming to build advanced new rural areas.
