Young people and the fear of unemployment after graduating

Báo Đại Đoàn KếtBáo Đại Đoàn Kết02/05/2024

Holding a degree in hand, but finding a job or not is still a big question for young people who are struggling right after graduating today.

Nguyen Duc Anh (born in 2001) graduated more than a year ago with a major in Business Administration - University of Commerce, but is still struggling to find a job in his desired field.

Duc Anh shared: “Every day I send my CV to different companies and wait for the results. But the rate of being called for an interview is very low or I don’t pass the interview round because of lack of experience”. He also said that he is currently working at a clothing store to make ends meet and is continuing to look for a suitable job.

Unemployment not only affects the economy but also the psychology. Le Thi Phuong Chi - a Bachelor of Hotel Management is facing heavy psychological pressure. The young girl is always in a state of stress whenever her family and friends ask about her job, leading to Chi losing sleep and eating, searching every day for recruitment information to find a job.

The worry of finding a job "comes up again and again" for every generation of students when they are about to graduate.

Besides students who are still struggling to find jobs that match their passion, some others accept to "jump jobs" to jobs that have nothing to do with their field of study.

According to the research results recently announced by the research team of the International University, Hanoi National University, the rate of students graduating from the wrong major for all training majors is 21.43%. If calculated separately by profession, the rate of working in the wrong major in some fields is actually higher.

After graduating from the Academy of Finance, Nguyen Hoai Thu is currently working as an online sales person. Hoai Thu said that this job is not time-consuming, the income is quite stable, just go live to directly advise and close deals for customers. "Every day I live 4-5 hours, 1 month I earn about 15 million, so I chose to stick with the job."

Many young people after graduation choose to work as technology motorbike taxi drivers, because technology drivers can earn a fairly high income, although it is very hard. Meanwhile, the salary of new graduates in state agencies, calculated by coefficient 2.34, is about 3.4 to 4.2 million VND/month. The significant difference in income has caused a number of young people to no longer be enthusiastic about applying for the right major and choose to work as technology motorbike taxi drivers.

Many students accept to do jobs outside their major for many reasons, due to many different circumstances, but perhaps the most common is unemployment, unable to find a job in the major they studied. So what is the way to help students find jobs in the future more easily?

Talking about the issue of employment for new graduates, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu - Principal of the High School for the Gifted in Social Sciences and Humanities gave advice: “Each student needs to orient their own career through personal efforts if possible. They must research, learn, and exchange to find out what they want. In particular, they need to understand their core values from their personality, interests, and accumulated skills... For example, do you choose that career because of the money, because of the comfort, or because you can help people... so that we can choose the right job.”

Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu also emphasized the role of career guidance, reputable units, and effective career guidance support will help students in finding their path to success.

In the report analyzing the Vietnamese education sector in the period 2011-2020, the research team of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences said that they had compiled data from 181 universities and 40 colleges. The results showed that the rate of university graduates with jobs compared to the total number of graduates in 2018 was about 65.5%. Most university graduates were recruited as professionals, while college students mainly worked as technicians.

However, according to the General Statistics Office in 2019, more than 3% of college graduates and 2.8% of university graduates are unemployed, while only 1.1% of secondary school graduates and 1.5% of those who have never attended school are unemployed. "The reason is partly because graduates with higher qualifications take longer to find jobs suitable for their major," the research team said. However, in general, the labor market still lacks high-quality students at all levels.
