Báo Ninh BìnhBáo Ninh Bình05/05/2023

In the Dien Bien Phu campaign (1954), there were many heroic examples with admirable achievements and feats, but not many people knew about them. One of them was the heroic martyr Nguyen Ngoc Bao (1927-1954) - an outstanding son of Ninh Binh who heroically sacrificed himself in the Dien Bien Phu campaign. In 1995, the State posthumously awarded him the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces.

Coming to Yen Mac commune (Yen Mo district), where hero Nguyen Ngoc Bao was born and raised, we had the opportunity to talk with many generations of commune leaders through the periods. In addition to learning through recorded documents, the story of the life and fighting of hero Nguyen Ngoc Bao gradually became clear.

In 1927, hero Nguyen Ngoc Bao was born into a patriotic farmer family in Yen Mac commune, Yen Mo district. At the age of 18, he joined the army. With courage, intelligence, determination and daring, he grew from a soldier to the position of Company Commander, and then at the time of his death, he was the Deputy Commander of the 426th Reconnaissance Battalion, directly commanding the 62nd Reconnaissance Company, Military Intelligence Department - General Staff.

During the 9 years from his enlistment to his death, he had many achievements. Specifically, in March 1949, he commanded his company to destroy 4 enemy military vehicles and capture 4 prisoners in the 426th Battalion's traffic ambush in Dien Xa (northeast of Lang Son). In September 1951, in the battle to destroy the 14th Commando Company in Kim Anh (Dong Anh, Hanoi), he commanded the company to fight and destroy many enemies, completing the mission excellently.

During the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Bao held the position of Deputy Battalion Commander, directly commanding the 62nd Reconnaissance Company. The urgent requirement of the Campaign Command was to obtain a detailed map of the enemy's deployment area. He commanded the company to infiltrate the enemy's position to grasp the situation, and obtained a 1/25,000 map of the entire Dien Bien Phu area, which was parachuted by enemy aircraft to the Command of General De Castries. The reconnaissance team of the 62nd Company achieved outstanding feats and was awarded the Military Exploit Medal.

When the campaign entered phase 2, we tightened the siege, the enemy entrenched themselves at Hill A1, the enemy's strongest stronghold in the Dien Bien Phu stronghold complex. Our attack on Hill A1 had not yet achieved any results. The request from the campaign command was to determine the location of the enemy command bunker at A1 so that we could dig a tunnel to bring in a large amount of explosives to destroy it. This task was assigned to Battalion 426.

Carrying out the mission, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Bao led the reconnaissance team to approach the target, accurately determining the location of the underground tunnel so that engineers and infantry could develop a plan to destroy the enemy. While carrying out the mission, the enemy returned fierce fire, and he heroically sacrificed himself.

Hero Nguyen Ngoc Bao fell before the glorious victory of the nation, but his example has become a symbol of encouragement and motivation for the next generation of reconnaissance soldiers to devote themselves to the Fatherland.

In just 9 years of fighting, he was awarded the Third Class Military Exploit Medal and two Second Class Military Exploit Medals. On August 30, 1995, Nguyen Ngoc Bao was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forcesby the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

69 years have passed, but the heroic feat of Nguyen Ngoc Bao is forever engraved in the hearts of those still living. For today's young generation, his brave actions are a shining example of self-sacrifice and dedication to the Fatherland. From there, the will and aspiration to build and protect the homeland are increasingly aroused.

Comrade Pham Van Viet, Vice Chairman of Yen Mac Commune People's Committee shared: For Yen Mac hometown, hero Nguyen Ngoc Bao is a strong source of inspiration for generations of young volunteers to join the army. In the martyrs' memorial stele of Yen Mac commune, hero Nguyen Ngoc Bao and more than 160 other names, are sons of Yen Mac hometown who heroically sacrificed in the resistance war against France and America to save the country, gain independence and freedom for the Fatherland.
