Dinh Bo Linh Award - Motivation of a resident doctor
Dao Hong Duyen, a pretty girl from Gia Phuong commune (Gia Vien district) is in her second year of the residency program. Hong Duyen shared: I dreamed of becoming a doctor from a very young age. But I also know that it is a thorny path, especially for students from village schools because the entrance exam scores to Hanoi Medical University are always very high.
I know it is very difficult, but I am not discouraged. Because I know many examples of overcoming difficulties to succeed that I read in the newspaper, listen to on the radio, and even right in my school.
In 2017, Hong Duyen achieved her dream of becoming a doctor when she was admitted to Hanoi Medical University. With this excellent achievement, Duyen was honored to receive a scholarship from the Dinh Bo Linh Scholarship Fund.
Receiving this award is a motivation and a sense of responsibility for me to excel in the future. When I entered university, there were times when Hong Duyen felt discouraged because studying was very difficult and stressful.
But the scholarship from the Dinh Bo Linh Scholarship Fund once again encouraged and urged me to remember my enthusiasm, determination, and sense of responsibility, thereby giving me the strength to overcome.
Unlike other people, who usually decide to take the residency exam and have a special strategy to study from the first years of study, Hong Duyen is different. It was not until her fifth year that Hong Duyen decided and started studying for the residency exam.
Because she started later than her friends, Duyen consulted study materials and planning methods from those who went before her, and from there made plans for each subject. That was also the time when the COVID-19 epidemic broke out, so Hong Duyen had to study online.
Taking advantage of this time, I also took the opportunity to speed up my exam preparation. Entering the 6th year, which is also the final year, Hong Duyen accelerated her studies. Finally, Hong Duyen's efforts also brought sweet results. In 2023, she passed the residency program with a major in Internal Medicine.
Going to boarding school, Hong Duyen was exposed to many types of diseases, many patients, and teachers who were really good in their fields. Seeing patients healthy and saying thank you when they left the hospital was when Duyen felt happiest, seeing that her path was the right one.
Revive the will to live
Gia Long was born in 2016 in Yen Lam commune (Yen Mo district), a boy with special circumstances, who has appeared in many articles of Ninh Binh Newspaper. Thanks to that, more people know him, join hands, and contribute resources to support Gia Long in his journey of treatment. In particular, through the articles, the boy's strength is also partly spread as a source of positive energy, lighting up hope for similar circumstances. We met Gia Long again when he had just entered an energetic summer vacation.
Gia Long has many plans for this summer: flying kites, going out with friends... things that before, because of his weak body, Gia Long could only wish for. Ms. Nguyen Thi Nu, Gia Long's mother, smiled brightly because her little son was healthy and recovering well after his bone marrow transplant surgery in August 2023.
According to Nu, Gia Long suffered from immunodeficiency since birth. Long's childhood was a series of long days in the hospital, celebrating Tet in the hospital. Seeing her son sick and gradually withering away, Nu's heart ached. But unfortunately, to treat the disease, Gia Long had to have a bone marrow transplant with an estimated cost of up to 2 billion VND. That amount of money was too much for a poor family like Nu's. Nu could only hope for a miracle.
And that miracle has come. In Gia Long's situation, through the spread of the press and social networks, the Red Cross at all levels has called for, actively connected, and mobilized all possible resources to create funding to support Gia Long in performing surgery. With the cooperation and contribution of kind hearts, Gia Long was able to have a bone marrow transplant in August 2023.
Fortunately, Gia Long responded well to the treatment regimen, so the total cost for the bone marrow transplant was only 1 billion VND. Of which, the support resources from brothers, neighbors, and the community were 500 million VND. The rest, Nu's family borrowed more. "The 500 million VND from benefactors is very valuable, giving Gia Long a chance to live. Besides, the care and encouragement of relatives, neighbors, the Red Cross at all levels and benefactors have created more motivation for my husband and I to be determined to save our child's life" - Nu was moved.
After nearly 2 years of bone marrow transplant, Gia Long's health has improved a lot. Although life ahead is still full of hardships, with the love and miracles that benefactors bring to our family, my wife and I will have enough strength to overcome.
