The Huadian Tianjin Haijing Solar Power Plant was connected to the Tianjin grid on July 8, according to CGTN . The 1,000-megawatt (MW) power plant includes an industrial model that combines photovoltaic generation, surface halogen generation, and underwater hydroponics, and improves the power supply capacity in northern China.
Located in the Changlu Salt Flats, the plant covers an area of approximately 1,333.3 hectares, equivalent to 1,868 football fields. The facility can provide 1.5 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity per year, meeting the electricity consumption of 1.5 million households and reducing about 1.25 million tons of carbon dioxide compared to using fossil fuels.
The solar plant has a 14-meter panel spacing, nearly double that of other plants. The panels are also placed at a precise design slope of 17 degrees, while most other solar plants use 30 or 40-degree angles. Both features minimize the panels’ coverage of the water, which can affect salt production.
Both sides of the solar panel can produce electricity. The upper side can directly absorb sunlight to convert it into electricity, while the lower side absorbs sunlight reflected by the water surface, contributing to increasing the electricity production efficiency by 5-7%.
The new plant will help promote the transformation of the green energy structure in northern China, according to Yang Fan, head of the project. It also combines electricity generation with salt production and fishing.
