Diplomat Pham Quang Vinh: "The questions of young people are warnings of the times"

Appearing in the Podcast “The TVFACE” with Journalist Vo Huynh Tan Tai (Ho Chi Minh City Television - HTV) sharing about the role of young Vietnamese people in the era of the country's rise, Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Vietnam to the United States emphasized: “Today's young generation of Vietnam has reached global stature. However, to contribute value, you need to understand Vietnam deeply. Your questions are warnings of the times.”

Opening the conversation with the young people, Mr. Pham Quang Vinh said: “I accepted the invitation to come here with the intention of connecting generations. Each generation has its own strengths, placed in a specific historical moment and environment. Those who have gone before can share their personal experiences, but young people, in the new conditions, need to reflect on themselves to draw lessons for themselves. The great lessons are still valuable, but to become your own, you must experience and reflect on them yourself.”

When journalist Vo Huynh Tan Tai raised the issue of the intersection between " Diplomacy " and "TV MC", according to Mr. Pham Quang Vinh, there are two aspects that need to be recognized. Firstly, both diplomacy and television are aimed at the public or national audience, both have the same goal of conveying the country's message to the people and the world. Besides the similarities, each field has a different approach, the most important thing is how to convey the message in the most attractive way. Secondly, each individual working in diplomacy or television has their own appeal, from the basic lessons to achieve excellence, you have to personalize.

Having spent nearly 45 years working in the diplomatic sector, through many stages of the country, from the period of siege and embargo to renovation and integration, Mr. Pham Quang Vinh told about his first trip abroad to the United Nations General Assembly in 1983. At that time, he realized that diplomats need to attach Vietnam's interests to the global context, while maintaining their own identity. During his time as Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States from the end of 2014, despite his extensive experience, the greatest pressure for him at that time was how to make statements that were not only correct but also good, directly impacting international friends. Diplomacy is not only about speaking through the microphone but also about private conversations, handshakes, coffee dates, and even "fierce" struggles. The important thing is to be sincere, to explain so that partners understand, thereby untangling the knots at the negotiating table.

Continuing with his personal impressions in the diplomatic sector, Mr. Pham Quang Vinh emphasized: “In diplomacy, 1+1 does not always equal 2 like in natural sciences . It is a “game” of the unknown, requiring prediction, consultation and systematization of knowledge. Natural science thinking helps me systematize, but it is personal experience that shapes my working style.”

When the young people enthusiastically asked many questions, diplomat Pham Quang Vinh emphasized: “I really enjoy interacting with the young generation because of their dynamism, willingness to receive knowledge and daring to take risks. Our generation often plays a good role, but lacks breakthroughs. Young people need to keep up with the times, dare to take risks, but must be well prepared with survival skills to be accepted by the environment. Today's young generation of Vietnam has reached global stature. However, to make valuable contributions, you need to have a deep understanding of Vietnam.”

And concluding his valuable sharing, Mr. Pham Quang Vinh said: “When interacting with young people, I learn a lot from their dynamism and generational questions. You not only receive knowledge but also inspire us. Your questions are warnings of the times, helping us to look back at ourselves.”
