Academic pressure causes many students to have mental health problems.

Accordingly, pressure from studying, exam results, goals, and family expectations has caused many students to have mental health problems.

Not long ago, a 16-year-old boy jumped from a shopping mall in Ho Chi Minh City. A piece of paper was found next to the victim's body, causing many people to feel sorry for him. The reason he jumped was because he was bored with life and wanted to be freed.

Last year, Ho Chi Minh City Children's Hospital also received two consecutive cases of female students (both 15 years old) who committed suicide by taking Rotudin sleeping pills and Paracetamol 500mg painkillers. Both girls had good academic performance, one was also an excellent student, had a dream of studying abroad and taking the medical entrance exam. However, in a moment of rashness, due to family pressure and no longer being trusted, the two cases above took medicine to commit suicide. Luckily, both girls were saved.

Another heartbreaking case is that of two 9th grade female students who jumped off Kinh Duong Vuong bridge (Thuan Thanh town, Bac Ninh ) and committed suicide. The cause is believed to be related to their studies.

According to psychologists, the development of quality of life brings economic pressure and a busy work schedule, making many parents have no time to connect and share with their children, especially families in urban areas and big cities. According to statistics in 2024, 1/4 of students have mental health problems. The cause comes from academic pressure, goals from family, friends, or sometimes set by the students themselves.

The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has identified promoting social work and school psychological counseling for students as one of the key tasks of the sector. However, education experts say that in order to operate effectively, school psychological counseling needs to be taken more seriously and professionally.

Need to create a safe educational environment

The Hanoi Association of Educational Psychology recently organized a workshop with the theme "School psychologists and their role in enhancing happiness in schools" at Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary and High School with the aim of connecting school psychologists, updating knowledge and together finding practical solutions to build a happy and sustainable school environment.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Anh also emphasized the role of the principal in realizing the 12 criteria for a happy school proposed by UNESCO. Only when these criteria are implemented synchronously, can the school truly become a happy environment, where each individual is respected, understood and developed comprehensively.

At the workshop, many teachers shared about practical activities that have been implemented in schools in Hanoi. Nam Tu Liem Secondary School introduced many useful initiatives such as "How are you today?", "What is your Christmas wish?", "7 days of gratitude" campaign..., all aimed at encouraging students to express their feelings and care for themselves, their families and society.

Ms. Pham Thi Ngoc Hue - Math teacher and head of the school psychology department at Dong Anh High School, moved many people when she shared meaningful stories about her journey with students to overcome psychological difficulties. Not only is she dedicated to supporting students, she also constantly learns and creates many practical activities to prevent and intervene promptly, helping students feel the care and love from teachers and the school.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam - Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Educational Psychology, emphasized that there are many theories in books, but reality is more important. He expressed his hope that teachers in charge of school psychology will continue to promote their internal strength and proactiveness to carry out this work.

“Happiness is very important. Teachers must be happy to spread happiness to everyone. We go to “heal” the students, but the more important thing is how to help them develop themselves. School psychological counseling must be done so that students can solve their own internal problems” – Dr. Nguyen Tung Lam expressed.

At the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi My Loc - Former Principal of the University of Education, Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Anh, ... and other speakers answered many practical questions about how to effectively implement psychological support programs in schools, and shared a strategic vision to build an education system that focuses on the happiness and comprehensive development of students.

The workshop is not only an opportunity for school psychologists to improve their knowledge and skills, but also marks an important step forward in building a sustainable psychological support system in schools.

With the support of experts, educators and administrators, the concept of “happy school” is no longer a distant idea but is gradually becoming a reality – where each student is understood, safe and comprehensively developed. The results achieved from the workshop will be the foundation for spreading the operating model of the Hanoi school psychology consultant community to provinces and cities across the country, expanding the network of school psychological health care in Vietnam.
