“… Every year when summer comes, my heart is filled with sadness…”.
That is the song “Noi buon hoa phoenix” by Thanh Son - a song that has been deeply ingrained in the hearts of generations of students since the 60s - 70s. Summer is the harshest of the four seasons, but summer is also the season of brilliance and beauty (according to the words of artists), so there are many pictures, poems... describing summer. In particular, music written about summer is very rich in lyrics and diverse in genres. Summer is for everyone, not just those who are still in school. It is the summer vacation of a year, the length of which depends on the customs of each country and the circumstances of each person, and... people in Saigon suddenly one day see students busy with final exams, universities preparing for enrollment, Saigon phoenix flowers blooming sporadically, the weather is hot, and there are rains that don't allow time to take off shoes, put on raincoats... then they know summer has come!
“The sky is rosy and bright, the royal poinciana flowers are swaying in the sunlight on the river…”.
That is the opening line of the song “He ve” by Hung Lan, which we sang loudly every summer. At that time, thinking back to school, it seemed so… light (both books and soul!). Every summer, we felt sad because we had to leave our teachers and friends… even though we were only apart for 90 days!
“Then this afternoon, summer returns here/ Oh, the phoenix flowers, the phoenix flowers fall all over/ Ninety days apart again/ Or is it a long century, but whose heart is crying for whom/ One day we will meet again/ The phoenix flowers have faded, the cicada cannot lull the sadness…” (music: Farewell Season - Duy Khanh).
In life, everyone has gone to school at least once, whether it was a short or long time, and knows at least one summer song. Time has passed, we have passed, only the song remains in each person's memory. Summer music has happy songs, sad songs, but whether happy or sad, all carry the message of youth preparing to enter life, a little romance of student love, a little wistfulness of the final years of high school, and a little vague thinking about the coming days of separation due to some circumstances, not knowing if we will ever see each other again?
“… Time flies by so quickly that it never stops/ Each season of royal poinciana flowers
The sound of cicadas evokes sadness/ The moment of parting is dark/ Only I know the regret
Or look in each other's eyes..." (song: Sad Memories - Hoai An).
Summer music in everyone's memory is a series of unforgettable memories of classes of students from the 70s and before. When recalling it, some people will not be able to hold back their tears:
“… My heart flutters every time the royal poinciana flowers fall/ Recalling the sad story
The school is still there, oh the collapsed roof and mossy walls, where the memories are sweet/ Where are the echoes of innocent voices?/ The day we walked together to the schoolyard/ Together we chased butterflies and picked flowers at the end of the road/ The laughter of a thousand loves…” (music: Green Days Memoirs – Thanh Son).
There are many summer songs, but the ones that stand the test of time and are engraved in people's hearts can only be counted on the fingers of one hand?! More than half a century has passed, the songs mentioned in this short article, whether young or old, intellectual or farmer... no matter how picky, must admit that they are very popular songs and they have stood the test of time and do not separate borders and people's hearts!
During the three summer months of those distant years, we “put our books aside” (usually our families let us play freely) and went fishing, flying kites, playing soccer… if we had the chance, we would go to the mountains or the sea… Yet when we returned to school for the new school year, whoever did their homework was praised by the teachers… Good… Bon… that was strange!
Now, every summer, what do students do? Is it true that students now feel a little sad every summer, but the sadness is not like ours back then, sad because we have to study in the summer!
Oh, if that's the case, then there's no real summer vacation for students, what a pity!
Some of the summer songs mentioned above have gone through a long journey of more than half a century. Now recalling them is just to remember the beautiful memories of a youth that has passed. And listening to summer music with endless regret and compassion!
