The first days of August are also the time when longan orchards enter the main harvest season. In all the hilly communes of Nghe An such as Quynh Thang, Nghia Dan, Minh Hop, Cat Ngan, Hoa Quan, people are busy harvesting and selling longan. This year's longan season is not only bountiful, with fruit hanging heavy on the branches, but also sells for a good price, with traders coming to the orchards to buy.
Mr. Phong Dien's family, residing in Binh Nghia hamlet, Nghia Dan commune, grows more than 100 longan trees, most of which have produced stable fruit in the past 5 years. Of these, 50% are native longan varieties and 50% are Hung Yen longan varieties.

“This year, each tree produces 130-150 kg of fruit, some trees yield up to 200 kg. With prices ranging from 10,000-15,000 VND/kg, each tree brings in several million VND,” Mr. Phong shared.
In Tan Mai ward (old Hoang Mai town), Mr. Dinh Van Dai is also in the bumper longan season. His family has 15 longan trees that have been planted for over 10 years. This year, the trees have many fruits, beautiful appearance, thick flesh, and rich sweetness. "The selling price of longan fluctuates between 10,000 VND - 20,000 VND/kg, each tree yields about 100 kg of fruit, which means my family has a source of income of more than ten million VND. The happiest thing is that traders come to the garden to buy, so we don't have to worry about output," said Mr. Dai.

In Quynh Thang commune (formerly Quynh Luu district), the longan season is more bustling as most of the gardens have achieved high yields. Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh's family is one of the households that grows a lot of longan with more than 40 longan trees, mainly Hung Yen longan varieties grafted onto regular longan trees.
This variety has the advantage of large fruit, thick flesh, and sweet taste, and is very popular in the market. “This year, each tree harvested about 5 tons of longan. At the beginning of the season, the peak price was about 10,000 VND - 12,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, the profit was about 30 - 40 million VND,” said Ms. Oanh.

According to local people, this year's weather conditions are favorable for longan tree growth. At the beginning of the year, there was a long period of cold, pests and diseases were significantly reduced, and there was steady rain, so the trees grew well and had a high fruit set rate. In addition, the techniques of care, pruning, and flowering treatment were also proactively applied by the people, so the longan yield increased significantly compared to previous years.
In recent years, people have boldly converted ineffective industrial crop land to perennial fruit trees, of which longan is the top choice. The tree is easy to grow, suitable for hilly land, does not require elaborate care, but brings clear economic efficiency after 3-5 years.

Currently, in other localities such as Nghia Dan commune, Minh Hop commune (former Quy Hop district), Cat Ngan commune, Hoa Quan commune (former Thanh Chuong district)... large-scale longan growing areas have also begun to form.
Currently, Nghe An province has nearly 100 hectares of longan, mainly varieties of yellow rice longan, cowhide longan, Thai longan, Hung Yen longan... Longan cultivation is still mainly based on the household model, small scale and there are not many large-scale production areas. However, the potential of longan trees is still very large if there is proper investment in varieties, techniques and consumption markets.

According to the Department of Agriculture, to improve efficiency, localities need to encourage farmers to grow early and late ripening longan varieties to increase efficiency, while being cautious when expanding acreage.
