Japan Today on August 20 quoted close sources as saying that Japan, the United States and Australia plan to deploy warships to the Philippines for joint naval exercises with the country next week.

Specifically, the Izumo helicopter destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force , the HMAS Canberra amphibious assault ship of the Royal Australian Navy and the America-class amphibious assault ship of the US Navy will participate in a joint exercise with the Philippine Navy on August 23 to demonstrate their commitment to "maintaining freedom of navigation" in the East Sea.
Japan, the United States, Australia and the Philippines held their first defense ministers' meeting in June in Singapore, agreeing to strengthen security cooperation to promote a free and open Indo -Pacific .
