After only 3 days of release, the rap song "Nguyễn nghiệp chưng" by female rapper Phao has reached the Top 1 Trending YouTube Vietnam. Currently, "Nguyễn nghiệp chưng" has reached nearly 10 million views and nearly 26,000 comments, surpassing "Bắc Bling" by Hòa Minzy or "Dancing in the dark" by SOOBIN.
Hard to accept
It was thought that this was a proud achievement, but on the contrary, many music lovers were worried. Although no one was mentioned by name, throughout the rap were harsh words aimed at promiscuous, womanizing men. With a series of suggestions with keywords such as "career", "sorry", "employee"..., the online community thought that Phao was referring to ViruSs.
Top Trending position, "Su nghiep chuong" achieved Phao's wish. But with Vietnamese music, "Su nghiep chuong" is difficult to accept as a true music product.
As singer Ha Anh Tuan shared: "Music is to inspire, to make listeners feel better, live more positively, and be more optimistic", then perhaps "Ngư nghiệp Trừng" does not meet any standards of music in general. And when it falls outside the necessary standards, these products are just "trash" music.
According to insiders, it is called "trash" music because these music products use vulgar, meaningless language or are full of offensive, vulgar images. There are even products that lead negative trends, promote social evils, reckless lifestyles, vandalism... The story of "trash" music is actually not new. Audiences have condemned "Censored", "Homemade Cypher" released by Low G, Teddie J, Chi, ResQ; the song "Mây Thật Mánh" by BigDaddy has lyrics that many audiences believe refer to women's bodies; the rap "Tượng" by Rhymastic uses many vulgar words or "Sashimi" by Chi Pu...
Since rap/hip hop became a popular trend in the Vietnamese music scene, "trash" music has appeared more and more because of the writer's "not afraid to express his/her personal ego". Along with the development of the times, the trend of writing music that is "straightforward, honest", "quick and concise, without flowery words" of the young generation of composers has made the songs more straightforward.
"Although "raw but real" is popular, in the field of art, poetry is still an important factor. Because "music is poetry, music is painting", a work must bring the most beautiful thing to the listener. That is not a requirement but a special nature of art" - singer - musician Huynh Loi affirmed.
Can't float
Phao's "bad karma" is not an isolated case. Previously, many songs were "remade" with offensive language but spread widely when "reused" in entertainment video clips. The speed of spread of this content is often very fast, regardless of the aesthetic value or cultural message they bring.
According to musician Vo Thien Thanh, "trash" songs like the above still have a place to live because curiosity and following trends easily make young audiences imitate. The proof is that after these songs were released, many young people covered them or used them as sound for their videos on social networks. This unintentionally makes "trash" music attractive.
"Evaluation standards based on Top Trending and rankings on social media platforms are not a measure of the development of the Vietnamese music market. Artistic creation requires freedom, but freedom does not mean indulgence," musician Vo Thien Thanh emphasized.

According to him, for artists, self-respect is not only personal honor but also a moral commitment to the public, especially the young. A responsible artist always knows how to ask questions before releasing a work, such as: What am I putting out? Who will listen? What is its social impact? Being easygoing in lyrics, pandering to public tastes just to attract views cannot be justified by the reason of "wanting to express personality". Every irresponsible word can sow the seeds of deviation in the listener's soul.
Dr. Pham Viet Long is worried that the phenomenon of "trash" music will negatively impact the public's perception and musical tastes, especially young people who are in the process of forming their aesthetic and outlook on life. Many opinions say that "where there is demand, there is supply", the problem lies not only with the composer but also with the listener. But up to now, Vietnamese music is still a floating market - whoever likes to listen to whatever they like, whatever they find suitable, they accept.
Singer-songwriter Thanh Bui shared: "The audience's aesthetic appreciation of art is formed from professional training. When the audience knows how to choose the best, "trash" music will have no place."
An expert affirmed: "Audiences can quickly forget a hit song but will remember good artists for a long time. Making art is a journey of dedication, and also a journey of preservation. In the midst of the market vortex, only self-respect can help artists stand firm, keeping art from turning into a cheap commodity."
In a fiercely competitive environment, a hit is considered a "card" for fame. However, in the artistic path, seriousness and responsibility will be the first factors that determine the duration of a talented artist's career.
