Thanh Hoa Dozens of students were absent from school or hospitalized due to stomachaches and diarrhea after having lunch with fish cakes and minced pork at Dien Bien 1 Primary School.
On December 22, Dien Bien 1 Primary School, Dien Bien Ward, Thanh Hoa City, reported that by around 9am, more than 50 students were absent or asked to go home for various reasons. Many of them had stomach aches, dizziness, nausea, and were taken by their parents for health checks.
According to Principal Tran Thi Van, after lunch at school yesterday, some students showed signs of digestive disorders and were taken to the school's medical room for examination. Last night and early this morning, many students showed signs of worsening symptoms and were taken by their parents to medical facilities for treatment.
The leaders of Thanh Hoa General Hospital confirmed that two students are being treated there and their health is currently stable. At the provincial Children's Hospital, last night, seven children were admitted with symptoms of abdominal pain, dizziness, nausea, and diarrhea. Doctor Le Dang Khoa, Director of the Hospital, said that three children have been discharged.
Ms. Van said she did not know the number of hospitalized students because they were scattered across many medical facilities.

According to Ms. Van, the school signed a contract to provide meals for students with a business. Lunch on December 21 for nearly 1,390 students of the school included fish cakes, stir-fried vegetables with meat, pumpkin soup with minced pork, and jicama for dessert; the afternoon snack was minced pork porridge.
Thanh Hoa Province's Food Safety and Hygiene Department is taking food samples for testing. The unit's leaders believe the students may have suffered from "food-related digestive disorders," but they will have to wait for the test results to know the exact cause.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Duc, Director of Phuc Nguyen Development Trading Joint Stock Company - the unit providing meals for Dien Bien Primary School, said he is coordinating with authorities to clarify the incident.
"The company's kitchen meets food safety and hygiene conditions, and input materials are always closely monitored," Mr. Duc affirmed.
According to Mr. Duc, some of the food in the meal on December 21 at Dien Bien Primary School was also supplied to two other schools, Quang Hung and Dong Hung Primary Schools, but no students showed any unusual symptoms at these two schools. Phuc Nguyen Company has 10 years of experience and is currently supplying meals to 11 schools in Thanh Hoa City.
Currently, the organization of school canteens is carried out according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Health, and local authorities. Depending on their conditions, schools can organize their own kitchens or hire outside catering units to deliver meals.
Food and ingredients must have food safety certificates and be checked for quality, freshness, and temperature. Cooked food samples must be kept in the kitchen for 24 hours to help trace the cause if an incident occurs.
