According to German magazine Der Spiegel on March 26, personal information of senior security advisers to US President Donald Trump, including mobile phone numbers, email addresses and some passwords, is being leaked on the Internet, raising concerns about security holes in the government.
This is another major leak following the previous Signal chat group incident.
Specifically, the cell phone numbers, email addresses, and even passwords of National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth could be found on commercial data search services and hacker data posted online.
Much of this information is still valid and is linked to many digital platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, Dropbox, and location-tracking apps.
Even Ms Gabbard and Mr Waltz's phone numbers were said to be linked to WhatsApp and Signal messaging accounts.
Der Spiegel said it was “easily able to find” some of the three officials’ contact information in commercial databases. Further searching revealed email addresses and passwords.
The magazine also suggested that foreign spies may have been closely following the recent leak of a secret Signal chat group, which left a trio of US officials facing a crisis. The incident occurred when Mr. Waltz accidentally added journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic magazine to the conversation.
In this situation, cybersecurity experts warn that leaked personal data of politicians could create opportunities for hackers to take advantage and install malware on their devices, helping them gain access to devices, emails, messaging tools and financial services such as PayPal.
Mr. Donald Ortmann, an information security expert, said this information could be exploited to deceive officials, causing them to accidentally reveal more important data.
The three officials have yet to comment on the incident. Meanwhile, the US National Security Council said the accounts and passwords related to Mr. Waltz mentioned in the Der Spiegel article had been changed since 2019.
