Specialist Doctor I Hoang Vinh Ha, Professional Director of Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital (Tam Hiep ward ), said that over the past month, the number of patients coming to the hospital for examination and treatment of eye diseases has increased, not only the elderly but also children.

According to Dr. Ha, common eye diseases in the summer include conjunctivitis (pink eye). The cause is viruses, bacteria or allergies due to dust, unsanitary swimming pool water. Patients will have red eyes, watery eyes, discharge, swollen eyes. If not treated and treated with the wrong medicine, it will lead to slow healing, scarring of the cornea, causing blurred vision.

In addition, in the summer, people, especially children, will go swimming more. If children swim in lakes, rivers, or places with unsanitary water sources, it will lead to the risk of serious infections and corneal ulcers. Conjunctivitis and keratitis are easily transmitted through direct contact with bacteria and viruses, swimming in contaminated pools, or sharing personal items such as towels.

The next disease is blepharitis. The cause is the sebaceous glands in the eyelids are blocked due to increased oil secretion in the hot season. Common symptoms are itching, irritation, red eyelids, and crusting. If the disease is not treated promptly, it can lead to recurrent styes or sty. At Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital, patients will have their eyelids cleaned, and warm compresses applied to help clean the pores and eyelids to reduce eye itching and styes.

Dry weather, frequent use of air conditioning, prolonged exposure to sunlight or electronic screens can also lead to dry eyes.

To prevent eye diseases in the summer, Dr. Ha recommends that people wear sunglasses when going out in the sun, choose the type that protects against UV rays; do not rub your eyes when your hands are dirty; wash your eyes with clean water after coming home from outside or after swimming. In addition, avoid sharing towels, pillows, eye cosmetics; keep your eyes and the area around your eyes clean. If you have any unusual eye symptoms, you should go to a medical facility with an eye specialist to be examined and treated promptly by a doctor.
